Most Accurate Caliber In NEF/H&R?
« on: April 19, 2004, 02:51:38 PM »
From what I've read on this site and the old one, it seems that the .223 seems to give the smallest groups @ 100yds.
What is everyone else's opinion on this?

i think you are correct.the 223 gives very very little recoil so the shooter doesnt have to deal with that.the 223 has small powder charges so barrel heat up is slower than the larger cal and the 223 is used for varmint hunting so the guys are putting higher power scopes on these rifles.i have  had as high as 32x on my 223.i have a 6-20x on it now.these scopes make a big differance

I agree.  the .223 is just easier to shoot accurately.  No recoil to speak of and very little noise.

I vote for the .223. I have shot 3/8" groups  AND LESS (3 rounds) at 60 yds in my back yard.  I do handload and REALLY love my NEF. ... :D

I agree with Jeff223 the lack of recoil makes the 223 a blast to shoot and mine is showing real potential as I am working up loads.

Another vote for the 223...I also think the 17HMR is accurate as well.

My buff classic 45/70 shoots cloverleafs at 100 yds. Granted the holes are bigger than my .223 , but it's the most accurate.

I disagree about the .223.  My .243 gives better groups at 100 yards, 200 yards, and 300 yards.  The .223 startes spreading bad after 200 yards.  At 250 they also start falling fast.  At 300 yards I'm lucky to hit the paper.  With the 243 I still have a 3" group at 300 yards, and 5" at 400 yards.  I have 6X24X50 scopes on both barrels, same reciever and trigger.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

For those who own a few, I bet the .308 Winchesters are the most accurate -- because it is probably the most inherently-accurate cartridge for which they chamber.
