Can we beat the 45-70?? Show me...
« on: April 16, 2004, 05:14:42 PM »
Hey guys, my Hodgdon manual shows a 300gr bullet from a 24" marlin barrel with 60 grains of H4198 at 2424fps max load, nice. From what I have read, one can expect around 200fps more from the 32" buffalo classic barrel.  Have you guys found this to be true??  If so, can't wait, if not, can't wait.  This 45-70 deal is amazing, just stop stuff dead in it's old tracks.  Awesome.

I'll bEt that 60 grains of H4198 behind 300 grain boolet will kick
like a bay mule! :-D  :-D  :-D  :-D
If doesn't loosen teeth i'll be surprized.  I have a rem rolling block
weights 11+ lbs. 48 grains IMR3031 pushing 405 cast will do it.

I'm loading 61gr 748 behind a 400gr bullet.  Recoil is quite fierce, but managiable.  Using it in a tree stand for Bears.  Want to nail them on the spot, don't want to have to follow them into the brush.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I have gotten up to 59 grains and it's not fierce but uncomfortable. At least at the range. That is why I have added a mercury recoil suppressor.

I'm loading 53, 54 and 55 grain (H4198) loads behind a 300 grain bullet now.  I'm figuring on getting from 2000 to 2200 fps out of this load.  I can't test it till I get my barrel though.

I couldn't wait to load some up so I went ahead and did it.  Now I have to sit and look at my nice pretty 45-70 handloads till the barrel gets here :(

Forgot to mention that I am only using a 300 gr Hornady HP with 59 grains of H4198. I am sure that moving up to a 400 grain would be More than uncomfortable.:)

Not in a Buffalo Classic but I am loading 59 gr of H-335 behind the 400 gr Speer for 1850 from my Guide Gun. I actually find the stout 400 gr loads more comfortable than the stout 300 gr Loads I was using. I can't explain why but the recoil doesn't seem as sharp or as fast. Sean
