heavy bullets in 7X30
« on: April 28, 2004, 04:49:38 PM »
Any one mess around with the likes of  150-165 gr, bullets in the 7X30 Waters?  Using 120's now with good accuracy but is it worth playing around with heavier?

thanx

Absolutely!  Sillywets need the heavier bullets for knockdown and boy are they accurate too!  I have had great luck with the Remington 150 grain corlokts, they shoot great and hit hard.  Don't forget that Ken Waters designed this round around 140 grain bullets.  (I still use Hornady 120 grain SSP bullets for hunting though)

good luck,

I had a 16" 7-30 carbine barrel for a while and it shot Hornady 139 gr bullets accurately, but they didn't expand very well on game.  If you plan to hunt with the heavier bullets, try them on gallon milk jugs filled with water, at the ranges you intend to hunt, to check bullet performance.

I had a problem with 168 gr cast

I couldn't seet them properly and still fit the throat.  A different style heavy bullet might work though.  I can use 168 cast in my 7TCU and they are fantastic, but my 7-30 has a shorter throat.  Pretty weird because I was really looking forward to using them in the Waters.

Robert,
Why don't you have  your waters barrel throated for the bullet you want to use in it?  I did that with a 30-30 barrel that I wanted to use only with cast bullets and my groups went from 5-6 inches right down to 1.5 or so when my bullets are culled properly.

I have thought about it.

I sure do like that little carbine.  It would be a good idea to ream it a little...I'll probably think about it for another year or so. Maybe ream it to an Ackley at the same time.
