Dead Centers for Whitetails
« on: April 15, 2004, 03:43:24 AM »
I have shot my 50 cal. Encore twice now with 295 hollow point PB's and 200 gr. DC's. The DC's are a lot more accurate in my gun and load almost as easy as the PB's. Here is my question. I hunt in Ga.  scopes are not allowed during black powder season. This will limit my shots to around 100 yds. with open sites. The only DC's I could find locally at this time are the 200 gr. Should I order heaver bullets or  will the 200 gr. be a good choice for Ga. whitetails? Do heavier DC's normally have almost the same point of impact or will they hit lower, remember I'm not shooting over 100yds.? The 295 PB's I have shot had a lower point of impact "about 3" lower at 50 yds." than the DC's using the same powder charge.
It is better to have it and not need it than it is to need it and not have it!!

At 100 yards, you have it made. No reason to go any farther!

The point of impact of every bullet will be different.  You have to try to know for sure.  With the same powder charge, the laws of physics say that a heavier bullet will travel slower and therefore impact lower.
The 200 grain DC are fine, especially at 100 yards.  If you look at the kinetic energy levels, DC bullets hit with more energy at 300 yards than most other bullets at 100 yards!  Their construction of soft lead with no copper jacket means they will also open up easier than other bullets and therefore put more energy in the deer than you would normally expect.
I hunt with the 195 grain DC.  I shot two deer last year at 160-170 yards with the bullet, and both were down within 40 yards.  I shot another frontal at 70 yards, and the bullet didn't stop until it went back through the liver; it opened to the size of a nickel.  The impact flipped the deer over backwards and it was gone before it hit the ground.  Truly impressive; made me a believer.

200gr DC's

My Encore will not shoot better than 3" groups with the 200gr DC's. However,
keeping my shots within 100yds, I have gotten 3 deer with them. The
shock delivered to the deer was tremendous. If you're getting good
accuracy with your Encore, you need not worry at all about bagging
your deer with them.
We need to change our politicians
like we do dirty diapers.............
for the same reason.
