Remington 700 Classic in 8x57mm?
« on: April 07, 2004, 07:42:02 PM »
Is this the modern version (8x57mm JS) that could send a 200gr nosler @ 2600 fps or is this the 8x57mm J version?

If it is the modern version, would it be better to use the 8mm (with the bigger diameter) or a 30-06 sending a 200 nosler @ 2600 fps (with better sectional density and B.C.) for elk standing on the 250 yard line?

Thanks much. Dan

Isn't going to matter much to the elk so long as the bullet hits vitals. That's where the 06 has a 1" to 2" edge in trajectory. But at the end of the day it's still a matter of knowing exactly where your bullet strikes at 250 yards. Both calibers have a point-blank range out to that distance with less than a 3" high sight-in at 100 yards. Beyond that it is an insignificant point whether the bullet is .308 or .323.
There is no more humbling experience for man than to be fully immersed in nature's artistry.

it's the modern version with the .323 diameter that throws a 196/200 gn bullet at near 2600'/sec.  It doesn't give up anything to the 06.  And, I am envious of ya - I've been looking for one of those rifles.  Mikey.

I have a 8x57 sportered Turkish Mauser and think it is great. It shoots the Hornady 195g psp at about 2600 fps, and has less felt recoil than any .30-06 I have ever shot. I am still in the learning curve of this round, but have shot 2 whitetails, and a coyote, and was very impressed with it.

I guess I just gotta have something different.  I know my ability and stay within my limits.  I think the 8mm in a 700 classic is exactly what I'm looking for.  Hope everyone here gets their tag this year.  Dan.
