The 1/4" by 1" bars are 1084. The 1/8" by 1-1/2" bars are 1095. Both make good knives that you can heat treat at home. As far as the files I sent you - no idea what they are. Experiment. :-) The horseshoe rasp - it's a shot in the dark. Sometimes they are high-carbon steel which makes a great knife - sometimes they are case-hardened mild steel which makes a great horseshoe rasp. Finally, the pewter you basically melt like led. Don't heat it too hot or you'll get the frosting/powdering as it cools. Right about 500 is good.
