Big Foot Tire/Wheel Kits
« on: June 23, 2004, 03:24:50 PM »
Anybody here ever put a set of the "bigfoot" tires on their 4 wheeler? How does it affect the handling characteristics? I ride in some really steep terrain and wondered if they would make my 500 Sportsman too tippy.
Perception is everything. For instance, a crowded elevator smells different to a midget.

The taller tires do raise the center of gravity but since the taller tires are all much heavier which lowers the center of gravity it's usually a wash on the balance side of things.  The taller tires require more horse power due to both the extra weight and reduced gearing and in general, handling and ride are not as good as with smaller lighter tires.  A lift kit which some combinations require has never seemed like a good idea to me.

On the other hand though, you gain increased ground clearance and much, much better traction for improved climbing ability and pulling ability through mud.  Most larger tires are 6 ply which adds to puncture resistance which can save your day.

I keep on hand 2 sets of tires and wheels.  One for mud and crud and just in general craziness the other set is shorter and lighter for fast trailing and pleasure.

Dogshooter, I am a pretty avid ATV guy and I run nothing but mud all the time. I have a 660 Grizzly with 18” of ground clearance front to back and it does not feel any more tippy than the day I bought it. If you decide to put the kit and tires and it feels like it’s going to tip over on you put some 1.5” wheel spacers and it will be stable again. Overall my bike has 6” more ground clearance than the day I bought it and I think it’s great. We do ride a lot of steep hills and stuff, but it doesn’t bother me at all.

Exactly what size tires are you looking to put under that 500HO? The only time you should need a lift on a 500HO is with 28’s. All other tires should fit under the bike fine.
