I sent for a manual for the Contender my bro. gave me, It shows a lever on top of the hammer for changing from cente fire to rimfire and th safety. The one I have has a pushbutton thru' the hammer, and a pin that sticks out to keep the hammer away from the firing pin. The serial # is over 215.000. Is there some reason this one is different than the manual?  Thanks

There are at least four hammer / safety variations in the contender that I am aware of.  The 1st contenders had no manual safety and the hammer looked like a hammer from a model 94 winchester (in my opinion) you had to use a screwdriver to adjust for rimfire or centerfire with the action open (if I recall correctly), then along came the second generation that had the slide bar safety - with the slide bar safety there were two variations of hammer one was kind of skeletonized and the other was solid - these were a bit wider than the original and in this case you had to use a screwdriver to select rimfire or centerfire, the 3rd generation had the rotary selector at the top that would select rimfire or centerfire and serve as a safety when placed in the center position.  After this came the G2, and since I don't have one of these yet I can't tell you what they have.  This info is to the best of my recollection, someone correct me if they have different information. :D

Thanks for the reply, Big Gun.  This safety doesn't need a screwdriver to work. It just workd by pushing it. The tang (?) of the hammer has an open slot in it.

He meant to select rimfire or center fire, you turn the firing pin from the rear with a screwdriver on the second generation.. For safety you push the bar side to side. If you send an older frame back to T/C for repair, don't be surprised if it returns with the newer hammer with safety and selector on top.. cbagman
