norinco 311 m-16 and a low number springfield
« on: April 29, 2004, 11:27:57 AM »
does anyone have an opinion on the norinco 311 it's the chinese clone of the M-16, regarding accuraccy, reliability. I had a norinco 305 or M-14 it seemed reliable but the acc. was lacking, 3 inches with federal gold medal match, much worse with anything else. it was fun to rattle off a mag at a distant rock and i actually nailed a coyote once with it but that soon lost its luster if i couldn't hit what i was looking at what good was it. my pseudo-sniper built one a savage 11G 308, witha 6-18 B&L scope harris 9" bipod and redesigned stock( raised stock for better cheek-weld, and palmswell grip) will put the above mention match load into one hole at 100 yards and 4 inches at 500, so why use a gun you don't trust but i digress, the question was about the 311 and i still have that springfield 1903 RIA the serial is 336 ### so my question is: is it safe to fire a middle of the road load in it the load specifically is 165 nosler ballistic tip ahead of 57grs of 47SL(slightly hotter that H414) in a once fired winchester case using CCI200 primers let me know thanks

Hillbilly,
In reality, your RIA springfield is not a low number. At about 285,507 they began the double heat treatment. This is the dividing number between high and low for Rock Island arsenal.Somewhere around 319,900,they went to nickel steel. So your action is actually a high number and able to digest loads which have anormal working pressureof up to 55,000psi.

Someone more knowledgable can correct me if I'm wrong , but IIRC - the magic "one million" number refers to the M1 Garand, with those over 1,000,000 generally being post-WWII rifles.  I think that feller got his guns confused.
