Very Accurate Combination
« on: April 03, 2004, 03:22:33 PM »
I just wanted to let you guys know that my new factory 26" .223 barrel is extremely accurate. I topped the rig off with a 6X20X50 scope and shot several 1/2" groups at 100 yards with factory 55gr FMJ ammo. 8)
I then set up at 200 yards and shot 1.25 " groups. I had no flyers at either range. This, of course, was after a "by-the-book" break-in using a bore snake instead of a brush and rod.
I got the barrel from Ed's TC for $215 NIB. I also got a couple of extra forend screws. Ed handed me two tiny washers that were slightly bent and told me to place them between the barrel and forearm. He said he couldn't understand why T/C no longer supplies them with their rifles. Mine sure didn't come with any.
I also had Virgin Valley do a 1.50 lb trigger.

This barrel did so well that I decided to send my 24" .270 barrel back to T/C again. The best I can get with it is 2" at 100 yards.

Thanks for your patience, guys. I know I've been a pain in the a$$ trying to sort the .270 out.

Bill,

Glad to hear that the 223 is meeting your hopes/expectations.  I have been getting good (3/4" is good for me) with my 7m-08 but tonite I measured COL for using the 139 gn Hornady Interbonds.  2.910 is what my stoney point came up with.  The reloading books say I should reload for 2.80.  Quite a difference eh?  But I will put them thru the paces so we will see how it goes.

Long.

Thanks.
I think the new barrel will do even better with handloads.
It's really nice to set up a new rifle and get accuracy thats good enough to get you excited. The scope is so powerful that I don't need my spotting optics-even at 200 yards!
I never considered handloading .223 because it's so available and cheap.
I ordered dies last night. But it's also nice to get such good groups from off-the-shelf Czeck 55gr FMJ.
My experience with .223 was in the military followed by civilian ownership of an AR15 and Mini 14. I guess I just didn't expect such accuracy.
The new rig is intended for serious target practice and varmits.
It's going to work quite well.

My factory stainless heavy barrel .223 will also shoot sub 1/2 MOA 5 shot groups when I do my part . I dont belive in barrel breakin on mass produced factory barrels , I just clean real good before I shoot .
