What bullet for 280 Rem?
« on: March 30, 2004, 04:37:35 AM »
I've decided to blow up my battery of bolt guns for big game, again.  I've decided to go to one gun for everything from antelope to Elk.  I'm probably moving and need to purge some stuff.  My guns are not entirely exempt.  I'm going to wind up with a 280 Rem (its a long story).  I do reload.

Just wondering about my bullet selection for this cartridge. I think I want a 140 grain for deer, etc and a 160 grain for black bears and elk.

Could someone tell me what are some good bullets (brand and model) for the 280 for these uses?

Thanks in advance for any insights provided.

Mauser,

You will NEVER go wrong using Nosler Partitions.  They have done what they say they will for the over 40 years years I have been using them.  Small groups and tight lines to you.  Lawdog

Why muddy the water with two different bullet weights and loads, when the 150 grain Nosler partition will easily do it all, and do it excelent!!!  Work up a good load, and practice, practice and practice some more!!

"If" i only had my 280 to shoot, this is EXACTLY what i would do, and never look back!!

I have a buddy here that shoots 150 core locks in his 280.  He uses it for deer.  I think you would have to look long and hard to find a better bullet that the 140 Barnes.  I have used the Nosler and they are very good too but I like the Barnes bullets a bit better.
Let the heavens decide.

The Nosler Partitions are an excellent bullet and I use them, but you would also be wise to ck out the Hornady InterBonds.  Look at the discussion on the "reloading forum".  Very Impressive.

The best value out there has to be the Speer Hot-Cor.  I once helped a friend clean a deer that he had shot square in the chest while the deer was facing him.  The shot was at about 75 yds with a 30-06 and a 165 gr H.C.  The bullet entered the chest, destroyed the heart, plowed through 4 or 5 vertebra and lodged in the skin past one of the hams.  He did that two different times that I know of and the bullet penetrated the entire deer both times!

Because of this experience, I now use the 145 gr H.C. in my 7-08 but have yet to shoot anything with it, yet.

kkeetr,

I've shot several deer, at least one bear and a few caribou with the Speer 145 HotCores in my 280 rem..  In my opinion, the bullet is too soft for anything but side shots on deer sized animials.  Maybe a 7x57 or 08 will slow it down enough to make it a better bullet, but i doupt it!!

I've shot numerous animials with Speer hotcores, and Hornandy innerlocs ect.., and those are the very bullets that made me switch to Nosler partitions!!  I like my bullets to stay together better than the Speers, Hornandys and other non premium bullets do.  But then again, i've hunted most of my life where there are bigger animials too.

I would suggest the .284" 154 grain Hornady Interbond.  It would serve you well for pronghorn, deer, black bear, hogs and elk.  If you wanted you could use the 139 grain Interbond for pronghorn and deer and the 154 grain Interbond for black bear, hogs and elk.  But the 154 grain will do it all.

Don't over pass over those Remington CoreLokt bullets.  I've found them to be very accurate and your best buy on "deer bullets".  If nothing else they make great low $ practice ammo.   www.MidwayUSA.com has them in 140, 150 and 175 grain .284 caliber.
