You cannot safely use heavy rifle loads in the .45-70 Contender.  While it is generally assumed to be safe to use loads developing up to about 30,000 cup, you will likely quit before you get there due to recoil.  Loads listed for Trapdoors will be safe enough; some of Sierra's Contender data is close to their M1886 rifle data.

For deer hunting and general practice, the 300-grain bullets from Hornady, Sierra and Remington work well, giving good killing power in max loads with lower recoil.   400-grain bullets can give good accuracy with mild recoil over 15 grains of Unique, but top charges of IMR4198 will really get your attention.

45/70 Contender Barrel
« Reply #3 on: April 29, 2004, 02:53:21 PM »
I will tell you the plain truth these barrels HURT.  This is why I am getting a new muzzlebreak for mine. I already have the muzzletamer from T/C on it and it does'nt help much. So i am going to try another more efficent break. I can tell you that heaver bullets will kick more so start out with the 300 grain bullets and leave the 400's for another day.  Don't go much over loads used for a Trapdoor springfield especually in a T/C barrel They are not throTED FOR HEAVER LOADS. The SSK barrels I think are rated for slightly heaver loads due to i think different throating deeper I think I am not sure you have to check with SSK for that. Ask JD Jones he may be willing to explain the difference to you and give you some help in that reguard and which barrel is for you. Definately get a pachmayr presentation grips and a forend the extra weight will help with the recoil a little as will the design of the grips.
