1911A1 Colt thinking of getting What do you think???????
« on: April 18, 2004, 03:50:11 PM »
I was looking at the 1911A1 Commander is SS. I was wondering how you like them and their weak points if any?? It will be my CCW wepon then it will be used for alot of target pratice and maybe some IDPA Shooting Is this a good choice for a 45acp?? It comes with two 8RD mags and I think the price is $750 If this is a good gun is the price good or high?? For now my CCW is a GP100 with a 4"barrel so it shouldn't be to big to carry for a CCW for me. Thanks Chuck

Combat Commander is my weapon of choice.  It just fits.  Stainless makes it even better.  I have no statistics nor political axes to grind, it's just the choice I made because it's what I liked best and still do.  Price wise, I don't know, it sounds just a little high but not far off.  Mine came from the custom shop and I paid a bit more for it than that.
If this were a poll, I'd vote "Go for it"  I really don't believe you'll be disappointed.

1911A1 to buy

lostone1413:  other than having a general gripe about the general quality, politics and management failures at Colt that has forced them into bancruptsy 4 times in the past 12 years, the price on that Commander is kinda high.  You should be able to do better.  Springfield has a similar model that is either all stell or all stainless, as do most of the other 1911 makers.  Shop around a bit for a better price............

As far as the size of that pistol is concerned, it is my favorite sized 45 auto next to the government model and my old lightweight commander is the one I carry for most occasions except general field outings.

Whatever you wind up with in that sized pistol, I would recommend some heavier springs for it, as the shorter the 45 the more it comes alive when you start to play.  I regularly stoke my 1911s with a set of Wolffe recoil springs in either 20 or 22 lbs.  Factory is supposed to be 16-18 but often turn out to be 14-16, which makes for heavier recoil.

Good luck and let us know what you wind up with.  Mikey.

My Colt Commander is the first thing I grab for a SD gun. I've shot competition with it and turned in some pretty good scores. Even though you will probably have to do some smoothing and accurizing, the Colt is still the best bang for the buck.  The other brands need work right out of the box too, unless you get a custom made gun. Not to worry, the Colt Commanders come with a 22 lb spring.  Go for it!

I carry a CGP now,I have a Bob Chowed Chromed Colt I carried for 35 years, until I got the CGP,before that my undercover was a 1911 A1 also a modified even though my duty gun was a Combat Magnum 357.I tried a friends Commander and found it lacking in coming back on target do to the loss of wt forward.I am set in my ways and will stick to the Colt 1911 models. The CGP is the best yet.

lostone,
My ss commander is my "go to" gun.  It's easy to carry and feeds without a hitch.  The only mods I made were a full length guide rod, a 22 lb. spring and a recoil buffer.  (mine came with a 20 lb. spring)
The price sounds about right.

I don't know about the bankruptcies, but I can agree on the quality control as I'm a part-time gunsmith and see a lot of 1911s come and go.  The Colts pass through the line with more things which I believe some other companies wouldn't let pass.

For example, I did a throat and polish job on a "Double Eagle" 10mm the other day because it wouldn't feed Federal Hydra Shocks for the guy.  Hydra Shocks should feed in ANY semi-auto as there is nothing about them so far out of spec.

Anyway, the feed ramp (even though it wasn't the problem) on this Colt looked like somebody had cut it with a 4" angle grinder.  I got a great polish on it, but there were still three gouges that were too deep to remove.  I see more and more of this type of thing on the Colts than I do on the Springfields, Kimbers, etc.

Also recently, I had to send a "Defender" back to Colt for guy because it had several major issues.  The slide-stop wouldn't function correctly and it would lock back the slide even though the mag wasn't empty.  It would fail to feed about every 4th or 5th round.  After looking the gun over, it was obviously just poor manufacturing practices that were causing all this.  Rather than bother trying to fix it for him, I just sent it back to Colt for him.

I rarely see as many problems with the other big names as I do with Colt.  The part that really un-nerves me though is how much they cost, combined with how little you get, and THEN add to it all the above.  This isn't conjecture my friends, it's just facts -- whether we like them or not.

I've seen PLENTY of great Colt semi-autos out there, and I am well aware of what a nice Colt is all about.  I can appreciate one just as much as anyone else can, but I sure wish Colt would start paying more attention to detail on the manufacturing end of things.

I'll do the best I can to get you those dates, or at least the years in which colt went belly-up, but I'm not the only one on that soap box or the only one who has issues with both the politics and quality control at colt.  Just so ya know.  Mikey.

Well, I have to admit being somewhat in error, but not by an awful lot.  I spoke with Colt to ascertain the information you requested and can provide the following:

(1) Colt Firearms was purchased by Penn-Texas, an investment group in 1955 and named or renamed it Colt Industries.  Colt Industries developed legal problems and became Colt-Tech Inc and renamed themselves to Colt Manufacturing in 1990.  In 1992 Colt Manufacturing filed for bankruptcy.  In 1994 it was bought out by another investment group, which developed legal problems in accordance with the klinton/cuomo/hud push to hold firearms makers liable, and in 2002 the firm again changed its name to Colt Manufacturing LLC to avoid further liability.

The gentleman I spoke with said that he preferred the term 'legal liabilities' to going 'belly-up' or bankrupt.

So, over the past 14 years, which was within the range of 10-15 years but slightly outside the 10-12 years I originally stated, the 'legal liability' problems for Colt occurred in 1990, 1009, 1994 and 2002.

So to answer your last questioning statement: "You dont know do you??" - yes I did but I wanted to make certain I had the correct information for you.

And for your last two statements are concerned: "You dont know do you??"   "Stand down and get a different soap box!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Here's what I have to say:
(1) Yes, I knew but I just wanted to be sure;

(2) I don't stand down for anybody unless Greybeard tells me to; and

(3) this soap box stays for anyone who wants to climb aboard and any other soap box that is appropriate to this forum is allowable as long as the content of the posts and responses are consistent with the philosophy of the web-site, and Greybeard will make the decision as to when to halt a thread.

Now, for my final word on this and Colt firearms in particular - over the past 10-15 years they have experienced enough problems with management and quality control to have learned that the competition is stiff, very stiff indeed, and they are making efforts to rise to the challenge.

In this regard it is incumbent upon me to be open minded and more close-mouthed and I will do just that for as long as I am in a position to provide some sort of objective insights to different products I have or can evaluate.  One of those, BTW, happens to be one of Colt's 3" 45 autos, I think they call it the Defender (????) that sure surprised the hay out of me this past weekend.  It was slick, quick and accurate.  One hay of a short package, for sure, but a quality piece.  And, if this is an example of what Colt is producing these days to meet competitive needs, then I  see this firearms manufacturer as coming closer to regaining its position in the marketplace.

And, thank you!  Mikey.
