We were at the local Wal-Mart the other day, and while I was picking out a new Wal-Mart Special 10/22 for the wife I noticed a 17HMR on the rack. It was a 917V, the only one in stock. The sales guy said that the Sportsters were still out of stock, so the 917V followed me home. I noticed it is drilled and tapped, with bases supplied. That's real neat because I don't particularly have a love affair with groove mounts and wish all .22s were drilled and tapped for real scope bases. The better rimfires are so equipped. Nice touch on Marlin's part I thought.

The only ammo they had was CCI hollow points, and I'm going to try to get my hands on a few different types before I take the new rifle to the range.

:grin: fla Brain your going to love this little round to bad they didn`t have other ammo . From what ive read and in my sportster yhe cci`s don`t shoot very well . But ur marlin may like them let us know fuzzy

$178.95 at the Wally World in Orange Park, Florida (near Jacksonville). They're pretty scarce. Every time one comes in, it goes out the door pretty quickly. The people at the store told me it is a super hot item, and they just can't keep 'em in stock. I was just in the right place at the right time - for once!

My wife's new Wally World 10/22 special is another hot one. When the guy went back to get it from the stock room, I thought he'd be bringing out a blued carbine, as I had asked if they had one of the specials in stock and he said they didn't - couldn't keep them in stock either. It turned out that someone had entered it incorrectly in the stock book. Lucky us!

I haven't mounted the scope yet, a BSA Radiant 3-9X40 that I had lying about since I bought it on clearance at Wally World a few years ago. I'll just have to mount it while I'm at the range.

I will report on my impressions in due course. I expect I will enjoy the thing, as I've had good results with the other Marlin bolt action rimfires I've owned. They're inexpensive but accurate rifles, as a rule.

There was a lot of talk on the old MT about how Marlin quality control had slipped in recent times. Now I know why.

I had started to install the scope rings on my new 917V when I noticed that the front base has no groove cut across it to enable me to mount the scope ring. I kinda wonder how they could have overlooked this little detail - and how many other people have experienced this - getting ready to enjoy a new rifle, only to find that the company screwed up in such a basic way.

Now I've got to call Marlin and wait to have them send out a replacement base, providing they haven't made all of them so defectively. In the meanwhile, if I want to use my new rifle any time soon, I'll probably have to go out and get a set of rings for grooved receivers - which won't be of much use to me when Marlin straightens out this latest screw up and sends me a proper base.

This is so frustrating!!!

What a bummer. It's so irratateing to buy something new and when you get it home find some defect the factgory let get thru inspection. Is there any way you could take a Dremmel tool or file and cut the groove yourself while waiting for a replacement?

I suppose I could, but, when the replacement came, I'd most likely have to reset the scope and resight it in. 17HMRs are not exactly dirt cheap, you know. In the final analysis, if I just had to shoot it right away, I could pull a set of grooved receiver rings off another rifle and mount a scope with them. I'd still have to burn up additional expensive ammo to get it squared away with the regular base when Marlin gets around to replacing it. If I knew that Weaver made a base that would work here, I'd probably be better off just buying another base and avoiding any additional aggravation.

They say patience is a virtue, but when dealing with firearms makers nowadays it's more like a necessity.

And, in the meanwhile, I've ordered some Hornady and Remington ammo from Natchez to compare with the CCI stuff I already have. I called around locally to try to find some cartridges other than the CCIs, but the prices I was quoted were indecently high; a person from one place said they carry Federals - at $12.99 a box. I don't think so!!

I keep hearing that the ammo prices are bound to come down. I sure hope so.

Well, I just got off the line with Marlin customer service. It's a good news/bad news situation. The good news is that they'll be sending out a replacement base; the bad news is that it will take two weeks.

I guess it could be worse.
