buttstock w/pistol grip for hunting?
« on: March 14, 2004, 07:40:37 PM »
I've been thinking about replacing buttstock & forearm for the synthetic ones on my Remington Express 870.  As I shop around and found some good ones like the Remington camo replacement and the Speedfeeds, I also noticed some buttstocks w/pistol grip like the Speedfeed IV and others.  I was wondering if anybody use the buttstock with pistol grip for hunting and their opinion.

Thanks,
Kenneth

For the many years that Remington has made the model 870 shotgun with wood stocks, they have always been pistol-grip style.

The pistol grip makes for a much more natural hand position in shouldering the gun instinctively for point shooting.

The English like straight grips on their traditional double guns, but then the English are always DIFFERENT...

Uh, I think Rattler is refering to an AK47 type pistol grip.  Right?  Traveler has the correct nomenclature.  Now, there's a difference between tradition and marketing!

Yes, something like AK47, AR15, FAL,  & M16.

I have never used one hunting, and currently do not have any, but I have had them and can say that they generally are more comfortable and you have a more stable grip, which means better accuracy.  Choate, Speedfeed, and Black Warrior brands are good, Advanced Technologies looks great but I'm not sure about durability.  Choose on the basis of ergonomics.

Benelli does offer a version of their Super 90 in camo with a black pistol grip like their tactical models.  I saw one person using one on the outdoor channel.

TTR - I used a pistol-grip buttstock on my predator hunting rig for the better part of a year now.  I have come to these conclusions:

1.  The drop-comb style of the buttstock reduces (some) recoil with full-house loads.
2.  It makes the gun just a wee bit lighter.
3.  It looks cool.

But here is the kicker.  I actually found that it takes a noticably longer amount of time to shoulder the gun.  This is no good when you have a coyote running up your nose.

I guess it all just depends on what you will be using it for.  I replaced the factory buttstock on my peice and was much happier.

I had the opposite experience, that having a pistol grip on my shotgun improved shouldering.  So to each his own.  Try shouldering before you buy, I suppose.

luv2call,

Thanks for the information.  Its gonna be used for dispatching snakes, pests, & strays, and dove & varmint hunting.  I've seen some pics of coyotes shot with that stock on the other varmint hunting forum (I think it was Predator Master forum).

BRG3,

Wish I could find one to try out.  I read at Shotgun World forum that SpeedfeedIV feels & shoulders great, and very solid & comfortable after several boxes of slugs & shot.

Pistol grip stock for Rem 870

I put a pistol grip stock on my 870 slug gun because I was tired of punching myself in the nose with the back of my thumb.  Have killed a few deer with it.  It makes for a much more ergonomically efficient hand position; I really like it.  It's made by Advanced Technology (phone 859-873-9877; got mine at a gun show in Gaithersburg, MD).  It ain't too pretty, but it has been very strong and durable, and yes, the gun looks cool.
