270 for p-dogs??
« on: April 27, 2004, 04:49:09 PM »
My 243 is in need of a lot of repair.  I use it for pdog hunting with 55gr to 75 gr hp bullets. How would my 270 do if I loaded it with 90gr bullets? It would be for shots over 300 yards. I have a 223 for anything under 300.
I would like to get a 22-250 but I havent been able to find one. I might just have to break down an get a Savage in 22-250 but I was wanting to get that rifle in 308.
Has anyone gotten there hands on a NEF 22-250?
None of the gunshops around here have them.

Ron

Well, it would sure kick more than a .243.
Ballistic coefficient on the 90's isn't too great. According to my software, with a 250 yard zero, a 90gr Sierra HP at 3,500fps would drop 16" and drift 37" in a 15mph wind at 400 yards. A 130gr Sierra Matchking at 3100fps would hit 14" low and drift 13" in a 15mph wind.
Speer lists a much better BC for their 90gr than Sierra does. If that number is to be believed, it would only drop 13" and drift 24". Mitch.

I have shot prairie dogs with a .270 loaded with 110 grain hollow points.  I don't know how fast they were going, but I didn't like the fact that you couldn't watch your hit through your scope.

Another problem I noticed was that the hollow point didn't seem to open up on the prairie dogs.  It just zipped through them like a fmj.  They usually made it back to their hole before they died.

While not p-dogs...I had great luck with the Speer 100grain hp on ground hogs in the 270....Run them up to about 3400fps and they were devestating on them.
