Has anyone shot 9mm for IDPA. Is this round strong enough to provide enough power to make 'major'?

I'm about to start shooting some IDPA and steel plate, and am going to buy a 1911 in either 9mm or .38 Super. I like the quick followup that I can achieve with the smaller round.

The 9mm won't make major. 38super will. That said I would look close at the class I was gonna shoot in because in a limited class a .45 with 10 rd. mags works out better;this being just one example.

Talk to the guys you'll shoot with as they know what classes are already set up at the range.

I know well some top guys using .38super so you won't go wrong there.I'm just an old .45 auto guy who's too dumb to change.

There is no Major PF in IDPA, the divisions that allow 9mm have the same PF, 125,000. The 9mm is a very popular round and the 1911 38 Super seems to be very popular with the top shooters in ESP. Which is better? I don't know, I don't think it matters with a 125 PF, it would probably come down to accuracy.

The whole purpose of IDPA is to get back to the basics of self defense. Like IPSC was when it first started out. Pick a pistol and caliber that you would bet your life on. And practice, practice, practice.

Interesting. At Dallas Co. IDPA, the most common round is 9MM followed by .45, then revolver. Almost nothing else shows up. The 9 is clearly popular in Glock because it will eat Blazer ammo which we buy from the local sporting goods stores for $3.99/box. Hard to beat unless your looking to compete very seriously.

Anyone have any experience with the Springfield XD? Does it really out Glock the Glock?
