H450 in 6.5x55 experiences anyone?
« on: April 20, 2004, 02:45:35 AM »
My load data references are pointing to H450 as giving the best or close to the best velocities in 6.5x55 in bullets from 120 gr to 160 gr. Just wondering if anyone out there has any experience with this powder/cartridge combo as a real-world reference.

Huntsman, where can you get H450 and can I get some since it's no longer available. I use it in my .243. H450 was a surplus powder and the supply ran out.

I knew there was something different about it when I couldn't find it on the Hogdon website. I wasn't aware it was surplus; I only saw it listed in load data. It tops out the velocity for 6.5x55 in 120 gr, 129 gr, and 140 gr loads according to my data. Sure would be nice if they could bring it back. I have no idea where to find any.

Guess I'll have to check out the next best (according to load data), which is Reloader-22.

Winchester came out with a magnum rifle powder for a short while. If you can find some of that you may hit pay dirt. H450 was a ball powder equivalent of H4831 or so Hodgdon claimed.

Contact Jeff Bartlett, as H450 is the commercail name for WC852 (slow) available by the ton (and cheap).

6.5X55 Powder of Choice
« Reply #5 on: April 25, 2004, 09:22:39 PM »
Hi:

If you are shooting a Mauser 96 with the 160 gr. Sierra round nose bullets, nothing beats IMR 7828!!!  You will shoot less than .5 inch all day (at 100 yards) if your barrel is in good shape.

For a match load, try WC860 (a surplus powder) as it will shoot 3 to one hole at 100 yards with 140 gr. Sierra Match Bullets.

I have found that the 6.5X55 likes "hot" range loads before it delivers extreme accuracy.

Reloader 22 gave only so so accuracy in my M96 Mauser.  I couldn't get a good consistant group of less than .5 inch with it with any combination of componants.

He is referring to WC852 (Fast).  This powder was made in at least 3 different burning rates.

Ask if he still has any WC852 (Slow), as this is what you are looking for.

47 gr's of H-4350 and 140 gr Sierra bullets makes my 6.5X55 CZ sing sweet music.  CAUTION: only use this load in new rifles
