In theory, he can take a hand gun with him legally, if it's on his orders. I've not heard of any unit authorizing personnel weapons to be taken to Iraq. It is easy, once you get there, to aquire a pistol to tuck away. I know personally of a young soldier that took his Kimber and could not bring it back because it wasn't on his orders. A friend of mine is now toting it around as his "back-up." Pistols are readily available once in country, from the old Beretta Brigadeer to High Powers', along with a host of others. From my contacts, the cost isn't inflated and he could easily dispose of it when it's time to leave country, recouping his initial investment.
