375 H&H Accuracy
« on: January 27, 2004, 05:40:53 AM »
I just got my new 375 H&H in a Sako model 75 Hunter Deluxe.  I topped it with a 1.5 x 6 x 42 Swarovski PH scope.  My question is, what kind of accuracy should I expect?  I haven't shot the gun enough to be concerned but the best I have been able to do is about 2 ½" 3-shot groups at 100 yards.  This is with Remington 300 Gr. Swift A-Frame PSP.  This is the only ammo I have tried through the gun.  All of my other guns shoot at least 1 ½" groups at 100 yards and main my deer rifle shoots ½" 5-shot groups at 100 yards.  I do not expect this kind of accuracy but I would like to see this gun do better than 2 ½" groups.  Any imput will be welcome.

You might also want to post your question on the Bolt Action Rifle Forum where Zachary will be sure to see it. He has a rig similar to yours and I think he is getting sub MOA from his and I believe he shoots only factory ammo.

Factory loaded Aframes are an awfully expensive way to do break in on a new rifle barrel.
You may need to try several loads to determine which is best when shooting factory ammo. Stay away from Barnes X bullets until that barrel has had a lot of shooting. Many brand new barrels foul quite a lot with those solid copper bullets.

Try a few boxes of Hornady Heavy magnums in 270 grain weight. They are deadly accurate for every one I know with a 375HH that has used them. They are inexpensive(campared to the Aframes)  Once you have 100 rounds through the barrel and several good cleanings you can really set up for accuracy testing.  Make certain you have a cool barrel and shoot only three shot groups before using another brand. Accuracy tends to get worse and worse with a hot barrel. Bring another gun to the range so you can let the 375 cool between 3 shot groups. Hunting weight barrels with high capacity shells tend to heat up fast so you should stick with 3 shot groups oply.

As a suggestion once you have a good 100 yard group which is zeroed 2.5-3" above your point of aim you can ususlly shoot the 300 grain bullets dead on the money at 100 yards and the 270 will be perfect zero at 250 yards.  One of the interesting traits of the typical 375HH.

I had a model 70 classic in .375 that shot 3 shots touching at 100 with Bridger bullets, but only did about an inch with Noslers. If you cannot get 3/4 inch with a Sako, something is fishy.

I have a Model 70 Classic Stainless that shoots the Remington Safari Ammo 300 grain Swift A-Frames into 3/4 in groups and less consistantly. Sako's are known to be good shooters, so there is something wrong. Good luck.

I have gotten 3 shots touching at 100 yards with a win model 70 classic stainless in .375 hh using Bridger brass solid bullets.  With Noslers I get about an inch.

That rifle is the most accurate, out of the box rifle I ever owned(except for a varmit rig).
