I'm new and want to get started in small bore silhouette. Will have to buya setup. From reading the forum, it seems like the CZ Silhouette is the best deal goin. Not sure what to do for a first scope or where to shoot sils in the Dallas area. Looking for guidance.

Come on over to Haltom City Saturday (8th). We'll shoot smallbore rifle silhouette in the morning, and air rifle silhouette in the afternoon (with air pistol following that).  This is the normally scheduled match, 2nd Saturday of the month.

You'll be able to see several setup's, visit with folks about what they think, and I'm sure even shoot some rifles. This is the weekend before the Texas State match in Austin, so folks might be a little more pre-occupied than normal, but will still give you lots of info. I'm sure there will be a rifle you can shoot the match with if you like, too. No problem. Another suggestion is the Haltom City Fun Match on the 4th Saturday morning. It's a great first introduction match. They shoot the larger pistol targets and allow anything shooting standard 22lr ammo.

The CZ is a pretty good rifle for getting started cheaply. Come see what folks are shooting.

1. Thanks, what I really needed is guidance and will be @ Haltom City, for certain. Will the CZ silhouette be a one category rifle? Seems there is a philosopy that it's best to shoot one rifle in two categories:silhouette & hunter.

2. In a word, yes: the best equipment for the best price or I got two boys in college. I'm not looking for an anschutz; however, no since underbuying and wanting to trade in a month.

Again thanks for the quick help, being inexperienced I wasn't sure where to start. This is a great forum.

I think there is nothing wrong with a CZ to start with, not only to start but also compete for a few years, as to the scope I would recommend a Bushnell Trophy 6-18 X40, it will focus at 10 meters as well, it is a medium prize scope (around $200 US).  if 200 seems a little high for you, then I would wait until I can get that money without buying a cheap scope and later regret that.  This 6-18 is a very good buy for its prize.

I think it is 452 , they also have a 452 model called silhouette, I have seen it in stainless barrel and syntetic stock

OK, I can't shoot wort poop , BUT I do know i little about CZ's

CZ 452 Silhouette- Blue barrel and action w/ synth stock. Gun was produced to comply with IMHSU something something standards. What that means is that is is a little lighter than the wood stocked version.
Price = ~$280 at Whitakers. This is the gun I shoot in hunter (could run it in both htr and standard rifle). Gun shoot scary accurate with less than $20 and 1 hour of mods. 1 holer at the pigs, touching at turkeys frequesntly, shoot 1"-1.25" at rams. NOT A GROUP AVE, before I get flamed, but I can do it on demand. I shoot SK standard plus ammo ($2.50 box) with a leupold premier "silhouette conversion" 18x40 power scope

CZ 452 Style = Same as above except with a matte NICKEL, not stainless, finish. IMHO-do not like this one...

452 Americian = Same as others but with a turkish walut carlo styled stock. Price = $300

452 special or lux = Same as others but with a simple stock = $100 less


I would also add a second vote on the glass. Good glass withh last through many rifles and dicplines and hold it's retail value. Look at the price od new leupolds and then hit e-bay and see what I mean. They re=sale used for 90% of retail all day long. If you can get a used leupold for 70% of retail you can make money EVERY time, I do it on the side from my home. That can not be said for other brands, there may be better glass, or less expensive, lupies hold their value, peroid. For some reason down the road you decide to quit and need to sell the scope, even if you buy new, you MIGHT loose 10%, if you buy right you can break even.

$14 shipped. You get 4 springs and 2 shims. Most of the time one of the shims will be "dead nuts"(if you place the shim in and the sear will not engage, it's too thick and un-safe, remove ASAP and do not shoot it). I think I used the thin walled shim, one of the shims should work. I have compared this to guys that use the ~$60 adjustable sear and MINE is as good. I have seen 1 that had a 'touch' of creap after the shim, but mine is a clean single stage. This is very simple and the springs are very close. I have found this to be a very consistant mod. By my lyman digital scale I pull right at 2.01 pounds most of the time. I need to add a few twists to my captive nut to increase JUST a bit..lol.

The site also has a ton of good info on the CZ's. Like I said Eric is a good guy. He is a home grown enterprize. He started by needed to mod his own CZ and when he called cz he had to order the springs in bulk. He did so and then sold them to "buddys" on the innernet to help re-coup the 50 min order of each spring. Then he kept being bugged with orders and he had to make a web site, blah blah blah...good guy. I got mine back when they were $8.00 delivered..lol. He also has some mounts and sights, etc.

I'm new to silhouette as well but I know these guys are talking straight.  I bought the CZ 452 Silhouette based on recommendations here and grabbed the Bushnell 6-18 off another rifle.  Off a rest it will hit the rams every time.  I'm not quite so stable.  My trigger came from the factory at 2lbs 1oz.  So I didn't buy the trigger kit.  The synthetic stock doesn't warp in the dry western air like my wood stocked guns did.  My Anschutz sporter stock leaned seriously on the barrel.  My Weatherby stock warped almost 1/4 inch at the forend tip!

The scope could be better.  Elevation adjustments can take a take a couple of shots to settle down.  I make the adjustment and wack the butt plate a couple of times.  Not so great in a match but I'll have to save up for a better scope.  I see people recommending Leopold and the Weaver T-24.  I'd like to hear more specifics about scopes.
