I did it!!!!!! 7mm-08 is a tac driver.

I started out using factory Remington 140's and it did not like them one bit 5" to 8" groups :x  at a 100 yards. So, I thought I would give this gun one last shot "before I got rid of it and got myself an Encore or Ruger #1" I went down to the local gun shop picked up some reloading dies and bullets,because I didn't have them on hand. Loaded up two loads using IMR-4064 and the 120gr NBT's and Hornady's 139 SP's. Both loads grouped 1" and under!! I am a happy camper now and to think I was going to get rid of this gun :eek: NEVER!!! I like it just as much as my Encore's and #1's. It just needed some TLC....  :grin:

kbee, glad to see things fell into place for you. These are truley fine guns for the money, they just need to be loved and fed the right diet....<><.... :grin:

I had a similar experience with a 7mm08 but a different make of rifle ( savage ) . I purchased a youth model for my daughter, it shot as you described yours did with factory ammo. I was ready to return the rifle to the factory, but my dealer suggested I try reloads. We discussed factory warrantees, he told me he would handle the warrantee if the issue of reloads came up. Bottom line, rifle shoots great with reloads.

I purchased a NEF 7mm-08 last year and it shoots Remington 140 PSPCL really good. I must have got lucky and found one that likes the factory stuff :grin:

  Would you care to share your loads for the 139 gr.? I just loaded up some 139's using 42.5 gr. and 43.5 gr. of Varget, I plan on trying these this weekend. I also have some IMR 4064, and BL-C(2) to try. These should make good deer rifles.

It's strange you mentioned about the 7mm-08 and factory ammo, I had the same problem myself but it was with a Ruger SS compact w/ 16-1/4" barrel. Spent over $75.00 on three factory brands of ammo, Hornady Light Magnum 139gr. SST, Federal Preminum 140gr. BT's and Remington Accu-Tip 140gr. None of them would shoot worth a hoot, the Remington's would not even stay on a 8-1/2X11 sheet of paper. Went home and loaded up some 120gr. Sierra spitzers with IMR-4064 and W-760 then went back to range this weekend. First group with the 4064 powder put 5 shots under an inch. After that I said to myself I found the ideal load for this gun. My Model 7FS in 7mm-08 is the same way, it does not like 140gr. bullets. I wish the ammo companies would load lighter bullets for this great cartridge. They seem to work well in carbine length barrels.
Anyway great shooting and keep us posted because I'm tempeted to get a 7mm-08 barrel on my H&R Ultra but I have this 44mag. barrel on it right now and having alot fun playing with cast bullets.

Don't know what the twist rates are in the 7-08 but sure sounds like too slow a twist to me since the longer 140gr seems to be the problem.

The NEF .243 seems to have the same trouble.  I think they use 1 in 10 for 243 and Savage uses 1 in 9 1/4.  Spits 100gr bullets into little holes all day long.

Some of the math types here might be able to figure it out  but I bet the 140gr is too long for the 1 in 10.  Don't know why else the lighter bullets are more accurate.

I'm not so sure of that. My 7x57 loves the 139 and 140 grain bullets and my little .17 HMR is 1 in 9 and that only shoots those little 17 grain bullets!!!....<><.... :grin:

I called NEF before I bought my 7mm-08, and they said the rifling is
1:9 1/2.
This rate should handle any  of the larger bullet    weights in this caliber.
I myself have not tried that out, as I have not fired it since I got it back from NEF with a new warranty replaced barrel.

I bought a box of 1000 Rem 140gr SPCL, on sale! :-)  some time ago......
The few rounds that I did fire in it before the barrel lockup failed completely did seem quite promising....

I will certainly post a range report when I can.....but I'm still also working up my 22LR Sportster, 12ga Tracker II, 357mag, and 22Hornet!!!!
Plus :lol: I expect my Huntsman barrel to arrive in a few weeks :)

Interesting, the 243 is listed in the FAQ's as 1 in 10.  Maybe they changed it?
