Is it time to send cabelas a message?
« on: May 08, 2004, 04:57:40 AM »
Cabelas has gotten too big at our expense.    Cabelas is now dicating to suppliers of optics and other merchandisers what price to sell there products for.  If they don't sell at retail, Cableas will pull there products from the stores and catalog.   Leupold is one of those companies that Cabelas threatened.   I used to purchase Columbia sporting wear products from the Columbia rep.  The clothes were show clothes that could not be sold in stores as new.  Cabelas complained to Columbia.  Cabelas now buys the show clothing and puts it in their bargain barn at a high mark up.  Thanks Cabelas!

Cableas is driving the prices up at our expense.   I am ripping up my cabelas vias card and sending it back to them wtih a explanation.

As much as I like their stores and merchandise line their prices are very high compared to everyone else. I basically use their master catalog as a reference guide. Leupold is in bed with Walmart with the Riflemen series and that won't work to Leupolds advantage either nor ours.

I get really irritated about things like this.  Between Cabellas and Bass Pro, it's starting to get close to price fixing.  Many people have complained to me about this and, at that time, it wasn't price fixing, but it seems to be getting close.  Bass Pro and Cabellas represent about 50% of Leupold's sales - that's alot.

Problem is, who is going to pay to sue these big outfits?  And even then there is no guarantee that the little guys would win.

And what I can't figure out is why people continually pay those prices for their stuff.  I currently own 5 Leupolds, none of which came from Cabela's or Bass Pro.  Why?  Because I can beat their prices elsewhere.  I have scopes that I bought new for $100-$150 less than they sell them for.  I can't believe that people wouldn't rather keep that money in their pocket.

IF you don't like their prices or policies - shop elsewhere.

I do shop elsewhere now.  It is a sad day and a serious problem when Cabelas can regulate pricing for companies like Leupold.  Either Leupold does it cabela's way or be removed from cabelas catalog.

Shame on Cabelas!

Cabela's can stick it.  They have listed a Leupold mark 4 6.5-20X50 mil dot for $980.00.  I got mine from a local gun store for 890.00.  Just helping out the little guy.

With the advent of the internet, and with great companies like our sponsors, I have never purchased a scope from Cabelas or Bass Pro.

Now, I DO go to Bass Pro alot, mainly to go walk around and clear my head.  I DO buy things like ammo, hunting stuff, and fishing stuff.  However, I NEVER buy a scope from them.

Interestingly, I often see many people looking at scopes, and I often tell them that if they go to this site, they will find a list of sponsors that sell optics for MUCH MUCH cheaper than Bass Pro, PLUS they don't charge tax.  I usually refer them to the optic zone since I have purchased many scopes from there and since I have been very happy with the price and service.  I remember one time that one guy I refered to came back to Bass Pro and noticed me.  He told me that he bought an Elite from the optic zone and was SOOOO Happy he did.........So was I.
