Rust remover
« on: May 06, 2004, 09:44:23 AM »
Has anyone ever used birchwood casey's rust and blueing remover on the inside of a barrel? I got an old muzzel loader that has quite a bit of rust, and i did a test spot near the muzzel, and it seemed to work good. Took the rust and left just the pitting. Could it harm somthing? Thanks- Tad :D

Yes, you can use rust and bluing remover to remove cosmetic rust inside a barrel.  You can also use Naval jelly (phosphoric acid).

However, please be advised that using rust remover (acids) to clean the inside of a barrel is a desperation measure.  I would never use it on a barrel that had any accuracy potential.  For a battered muzzleloader, it would not hurt anything.
