Anyone shoot a .38-56 WCF as a hunting rifle?
« on: April 12, 2004, 03:36:49 PM »
Especially in a modern SS or bolt action? I'm planning one on my Ruger #3 action, and of course, there is no load data (that I've found) for high-pressure loads.

I plan to use this as a long-range antelope and deer rifle, hoping that I can get 2600 fps w/200 gr jacketed bullet from a 26" bbl. If so, with practice and a laser RF, I think it will be a credible 300 yd rifle according to what I get from Point Blank Ballistics.

I'll also work up a cast bullet load at around 250 gr. for hogs & bear here in E TN.

Any load information will be greatly appreciated. Also, leads on cases or used forming dies, loading dies, etc. wanted.

Finally, anyone have loose wood from a #1 Ruger?

Lee had a reloading set out at one time for this number. As I remember, if you ran a 45-70 case thru a 40-65 FL sizer, it could easily be formed to final dimension in the 38-56 FL sizer. Can't remember ever having any rejects doing that. Got my loading specs from Barnes and from the instructions that came with the Lee set. 8)

Thanks talon,

that is good info. I would never have thought it, but Lee*does* make a die set for this cartridge. I will check the neighborhood for someone with a  .40-65 FL resizer that I might run a couple dozen .45-70 cases through.

Do you want a fatory stock or a semi inlet? I am pretty sure I still have
a semi inlet or two.

KSR,

thanks for your reply to my "pretty old post" :-)

Wha'cha got in a stock for the Ruger? I am not wanting a carbine stocka'la the original #3, but rather more like a gentleman's sporting rifle stock and forend from the 1880s.

Tell me what sort of wood you have and the prices if you'd be so kind.
