First trip north questions
« on: May 18, 2004, 04:45:00 PM »
I am interested in a road trip to Alaska with  going through Canada.
I understand there is a ferry out of Oregon. Is there a place to  find info on ferry.  Will be the first time  and looking for info on places to go and things to see.

The Alaska Marine Highway System departs from Bellingham, WA.  Go to www.dot.state.ak.us/amhs for info.  Also find yourself a copy of the Milepost.  It will provide all the info you need to know about travelling to AK.  Go here:  www.themilepost.com.

If you meant 'without' going through Canada, that's possible too.

Most of the ferry's stop up in Haines, the farthest north point in S.E. Alaska.  From there you must still drive into Canada and then back into Alaska.

But, in the summer there's a few ferry runs that go from Juneau straight across the gulf (that's why they're called 'cross gulf' trips :)) to Valdez/Seward.  You can skip Canada completely that way.

I would like to skip Canada and be able to pack a pistol for personal safety.
