Be advised NEF tells me that .375 dia bullets will NOT work in them.  I asked.

It is a GREAT rifle and VERY accurate  .  I shoot ONLY Black Powder and can shoot 2 inch groups at 100 yards with the factory sight.
The fit and finish are good but once again they are H&R which is to say its not Rolls Royce standards.  That said it shoots better than some very expensive 38-55's I've seen.   Nice smooth and worth the $$$.  For what its worth I paid $350.00 for my Target and $ 325.00 for my Buffalo Classic both new in the box.   Try "GunBroker.com"  nice range of H&R rifles some new in the box.  I bought one and the deal was super, fair and very quick.  Let me know if you want some info on shooting the 38-55 with Black Powder.  Good Luck, I swear you cannot go wrong. :D

P.S.    Handi is quite correct once again, the rifle likes a larger slug.  I shoot only .379 and the results are sweet!

I'm interested in getting a 38-55- for one reason I don't like heavy recoil.I shoot a TC Hawkin .50 and cast my own bullets for that- mainly soft lead with some wheel weights added.I think the bullets are about 350 grains and I use about 80 grains of Pyrodex and the rifle shoots nicely-not too much recoil.I'm wondering about getting either a 38-55 Target or 45-70 Buffalo and using black powder[ or Pyrodex] to load it with.I've never hand loaded before but would like to give ita try.Any advice is welcome

Talk to Montanan or Junior, either one has a lot of experience.  Another spot is try the www.shilohrifle.com (I think that's correct) they have a forum there and have LOTS of BP experience.
