trebel hooks
« on: April 07, 2008, 05:29:24 AM »
Do any of you guys take the treble hooks off your crank baits and use singe hooks. Most seem to come with treble hooks but I like to use singles
has anyone changed theres how did it work out? I,m headed back to Va. next month hope to get some bass fishing in, might be a little easier on everybodys
lips and eyes and my fingers when I try to release them. I use pliers but are treble hooks really more effective. Thanks all.

Yes, It will work. Top water plugs and stick baits you have to let the bass eat the bait good. Or you will miss a lot of fish. You will miss a few for not using treble hooks anyways.

I have never tried single hooks on crank baits, but it sound interesting. I take the treble hooks off spoons and replace them with a large single, very effective. What I have done to crank baits is remove the front trebles completely and leave just a rear treble or the center and rear treble. Same amount of solid hook ups and less snags and lost lures, plus easier hook removal from the fish. I did catch a front treble from a large Rapala in the center of the index finger while the back treble was in the lip of a large northern pike, what a painful bloody mess.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll try it out with only a hook on the rear of the lure. I use vibrex spinners up here for silver salmon and they have a big single hook in the package to replace the treble hook with, I really haven't bass fished in years and I'm ordering some lures for the trip. Mid May on the New River in Va. and some local farm ponds thanks for the info.

It should work fine. A couple of years back, a friend and I went to fish the Smokey Mtn Park for trout. I brought both my fly rod and my ultralight rod/reel and modified my spinners and small crawfish by clipping off excess hooks and flattening the barb. (They only alow a single hook without a barb.) They not only worked fine but that rig caught the most fish on the trip. No problems.
