Brooks Range Grizzly hunt
« on: April 22, 2004, 09:55:39 AM »
This Southern hunter has booked a grizzly/caribou hunt for this fall( Sept. 20-30). The hunt will be in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. I found the hunt on the webb and have talked with outfitter a couple of times and several of his references.  The hunt will be my first in Alaska. Any words of wisdom from you with Alaska hunt experience...............hlr

Late September brings hard freezes on the Brooks Range, I believe. Overcast, drizzle/flurries most probably. Get plenty of exercise walking on VERY uneven surfaces. Practice paying attention to do what you are told. Know what your rifle can do and what you can't. Take a look at the "hunting Alaska" forum on this site. Be ready to have the experience of your life. 8)

My First Brown Bear Hunt

I am leaving in two weeks for perryville to hun the big Brownies on the peninsula, I will let you know how I fare. My guide had me buy Helly Hansen Rainwear and hip waders, the undergrowth is something fierce up there. I have taken several black bear up there and you definitely want to watch where you step.

Make sure you've got a good sleeping bag rated for below freezing temps.  Also a good pair of waders that you can wear for days.  I put insoles with an arch support inside my waders so I don't get sore feet.  Poly thermal underwear, and wool or woolblend socks.  The best raingear you can get ahold of, prefferiably Helly-Hanson.  That time of the year you can see lots of snow, kind of late in the season.  Good luck!            Sourdough

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Thanks for your response and advice. Sounds like I will be in for a cold wet hunt.

What would be your choice on the best dates for a hunt in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for grizzly and caribou. Not particularly interested in the quality of the caribou meat due to transportation cost.
