What can I expect for 7-30 accuracy?
« on: January 07, 2003, 11:44:25 PM »
Out of curiosity what kind of groups do some of you 7-30 owners acheive out of your contenders. I just picked up a 14 inch barrel and am getting ready to go to the range today. This is my first post and I just want to say the information on this board is outstanding!

I have been able to get .75" groups @ 100yds. with my Bullberry 7-30 Waters.   This is my favorite barrel.

are you getting those groups with the factory round?  Mine groups a little over an inch with the factory round, and slightly better on average with handloads.  A good shot can do even better,  but I am too shaky.   markc :-)

No.  I only shoot reloads.  Here is my loading info.  The target load listed below shoots sub-moa in my barrel.  The hunting load is just slightly over an inch.  Can't give you speed as I don't have a Chrony.

Target Load
Case - Federal 7-30 Waters
Bullet - Sierra 130gr. HPBT Match King
Powder - H4895
Charge - 32.5gr.
Primer - Winchester LR

Hunting Load
Case - Federal 7-30 Waters
Bullet - Sierra 130gr. SPT Single Shot Pistol
Powder - AA2230C
Charge - 28.5gr.
Primer - Winchester LR

Can't rightly say I've ever seen a factory 7-30 barrel that wouldn't shoot MOA with a variety of loads. With your best loads you should get plenty of groups in the 1/2" to 3/4" range if you can shoot that well. All this at 100 yards. Some of my best groups were 0.27" at 100 yards and 1.5" at 250 yards. I've shot lots in this general range from several TC factory barrels.

I think you should still be able to access my Reloading Page from the Home Page and on it I have a bunch of my favorite 7-30 loads listed. We are in the process of moving to a new look and I'm not postitive if Matt has all the various pages of the site properly linked to the new Home page now or not but I think most are.

My 14" 7x30 factory barrel will shoot 5 shot groups in the 3/4" range with it's favorite loads pretty consistently.

I have had good results from Imr 4064, AA2520, RL 15,Varget, IMR 4320,H414 and H380.

RL 15, Varget and H380 are my favorites, RL 15 and H380 for 120 BT's and Varget for 140 SP's

 Graybeard - I have to question your group size  at .27". Bullet size for any 7mm is .284, making it kinda hard to shoot a group smaller than this.

Group size is measured center to center.

I use a mean and standard deviation formula rather than introducing my "human error" factor. This tends to give your true group size. I'll post a thread later with how this works. Too complicated to remember off the top of my head. Thanks!

TC Nimrod if you question how a group can be less than caliber size I have to question your methodology. Reading it in the post on it sure didn't do anything to clear that up. You failed to discuss how you measure groups on the paper only how to convert to MOA which is of no value.

It is common practice to measure group size from center of hole to center of hole. Generally speaking the determination of hole center is not so easy. So what most do is measure outside to outside which are clearly defined points if the holes do not overlap and give the same measurement as center to center.

In the case of the group measuring only 0.27" it was necessary to take a measurement of the single hole across the widest point and then subtract 0.284". This is really pretty elementary stuff for folks who really know about shooting groups and measuring them.

I'll admit my mistake. My first thought was you'll only have one hole measuring .284, not what you had - one elongated hole. I have a thread on here with some formulas that are probably overkill for the average shooter.
I'm also trying real hard not to take the jab you took at me personnally!! I am new to this forum - not to shooting, repairing, and reloading for T/C. I am know in my shooting circle for not leaving well enough alone.... there's always a better way. I'm not happy just shooting, I want to know why and how - which brings me full circle to the process. Ask me sometime how to determine velocity loss/gain as it applies to barametric pressure :-D

T/C nimrod, you are getting way to serious about this. Shooting is supposed to be FUN. Just enjoy it. That's why I gave up competitive shooting. It was becoming more like work than fun and I was real cranky when I didn't take first place every time. Took all the enjoyment out of it.
