22LR and turkeys?
« on: March 07, 2004, 02:01:46 AM »
My wife loves to turkey hunt but she is very recoil sensitive and we can't work a 22 Mag into our budget at this time as much as I would like to :( .
Is a 22LR enough gun in your opinion for turkeys under 40yds?

Thanks,

Since she will be limited to .22 lr, why not go with some CCI Velocitors;
they are a full 40 grains at 1450fps = 187 fp of energy
  Other 40 grain HV .22 lrs are about 40grains at 1250=139 fp of energy.
     Both in theory and practice, the Velocitors seem to help "bridge the gap" between long rifle and mag.

Ironglow,

I bought Rem Yellow Jackets to try first.  I will buy the Velocitors next.  I will compare them for accuracy and penetration!

Thanks,

Hillbilly, .22 lr is awful light for anything but headshots. If  your wife has a deer rifle or if you have a spare, squib loads would be your answer. They can often be done without formal loading equipment. Let us know what you have to work with and we'll walk you through it.

people underestimate the 22 LR-and shot placement is absolutely critical, but with a  4X scope  and  a rest[ shooting sticks work fine]limit your shots to 40 yards, and you can drop a buck in his tracks by putting one right behind his eye.The best part about a 22 is there is no recoil, you don't flinch and your shooting is more accurate.Turkeys would pose no problem under similar conditions
