What about Rossi, single shot rifle/shotgun combos????????

I have had unfortunate luck with my NEF Handi Rifle and it went home to moma on Monday. I was coming home through Abliene and stopped at Academy to see what they had. Ask what they had in 223. The lady handed my a Rossi, single shot, blue rifle w/ matching 20 gauge barrel, scoped on rifle barrel for $219. I was SORELY tempted to sell the NEF when it comes back and get this, but then I thought, Better Check w/ the Experts. So, spurts, what a 'bout it?

Fit, finish, accuracy, reputation?
Thanks and Gig''em

I do not own one nor have I evr shot one but some on here think they are pretty good "camp" rifle. They have a pretty good feel to them..I have picked one up before....219 is a heck of a price for two barrels and a scope......what would you be asking for the Handi.... it wouldn't happen to be a 45-70 or a 35 Whelen would it?   Ok..Edited as I read some of your earlier posts.so its a 223 huh...mine sticks occasionally too but polishing the chamber did help mine. On the other accuracy issues...I don't know...correct rings and even the scope base (is the base tight?) scope itself...good? o-ring on forearm screw?? These handis are quirky sometimes...others shoot like a house afire right off the shelf......I really might be interested in buying it if that is your decision.....let me know...is it a wood stocked rifle or the plastic? Sorry your having trouble....

I have one of their single shot rifles in stainless steel 357 magnum, this is my boat/truck gun.  In a small caliber I think they are great since the action is proportionately smaller, and lighter (by 1.5 pounds!)  than the NEF, very nicely ballanced, and decent quality.  I'm happy with mine. Rossi is also promising a additional barrel plan similar to NEF supposedly starting in the early fall of this year.  That price is hard to beat.

Couple of thought, questions, PLEASE:
1. Trigger, good, bad, or indifferent?
2. Accuracy?
3. Ejection/extraction, good or bad?

MarkA:

I cannot speak for the rest of the gang here...but I wouldn't take 5 Rossi's for 1 broken down unaccurate NEF.....Everyone that I have looked at looked like crap...some of the lock ups were loose...almost all of the triggers felt like the sear was dragging over a gravel driveway, and I have yet to see one I truely wanted...at any cost, and if someone gave me one I would trade it off for another NEF...but...hey that's just me...they might be a good buy...they might not...but I don't think they will ever take a bite out of NEF's market share anytime soon.

Don't own one but have used my shooting pards Rossi Combo 223/20gauge quite a bit. Trigger is a shotgun trigger so it is a bit stiff for serious range work but accuracy with factory 223 55 grain FMJ was not all that bad (1 1/2-2 inches @ 100 yards). Only things I disliked about the shotgun was that
1) it is not the most photogenic to my eye (unfortunately though I break clays better with it than my O/U due to the fit)
2) the action is hard to open after 10 or so shots in a row on the clay range as it tends to heat up.

Still for the shooter on a budget, seems to be an ok setup though I still try to stick with made in USA for a number of reasons.

Good luck.

I have the Rossi 20/223 that I bought for my grandson. We both like shooting this gun. It is a rougher finish than the NEF's that I own, but accuracy is about on par. We both get around 2" groups at 50 yds with the open sights that it came with. That is about what I expect from my NEF's. I suppose the only place where Rossi wins is that you get a great carrying case when you get the matched set  . I do like the NEF better (American made, etc). I look at things this way: I am not rich, nor do I care about appeasrances. NEF is my (Remington, or custom American gun), while the Rossi is my ( Benelli, etc.). They both do what I need done and do it very well.

1. Trigger is very decent on mine better than my 2 NEFs
2. Accuracy on par with NEF 1"@50yards .357 mag
3. Mine has extractor, works flawless, great for the reloader

The lock up on mine is tight as a bank vault, quality comperable to NEF neither of which are Swiss watches, just good work guns you'll not feel bad leaving behind your truck seat.  Rossi will never replace the NEF but it fills some nitches the NEF lacks, my needs for example- a small frame stainless steel .357 mag rifle.    And the price was unbeatable.  Their stainless .410 combos are selling well because they have a unique product.

ROSSI = TRASH!!!!!!!! and its not because i am an NEF lover, 2 different friends of mine thought they got these great deals on rossi combos, for some reason the 243/20ga wont get any better then a 5 inch group at 100 yrds with the 243 barrel, and the 20ga is ok, but nothing great. the other was a 270/shotgun combo, i forget the ga of the shotgun, i think it was a 12ga, but it may  have been a 20ga, but either way this was another gun that did not group well at all, it would put one out of 3 shots where you wanted it, and the others would be 3-7 inches out in the middle of no where. now i cant say about the smaller stuff like 44mag, or 357, or even a 30-30, those might not be bad, i really dont know, but those 2 are the only rossi guns i have used, and i would not buy one myself if it was on sale for $9.95. now only my two cents, but why buy junk like that, when the NEF guns are not hardly any more money, and are great guns????

I have only owned one H&R rifle a 30-30 bought new it would not shoot better than 5-6" at 100yds. I could say the H&Rs are junk, but I realize that every gun maker produces a lemon from time to time.

Rossi's do not have the quality fit and manufacturing that H&R/NEF do. But then NEF doesn't have the quality of  an Encore. IKt is what you choose to use and how you prepare it for that use that tells the tale. I don't have an Encocre, but I do have NEF's and Rossi's.  I like them both for their purposes. But then what do I know? I own several hunting rifles and choose to hunt with a 20ga. Pardner   GO FIGURE!
