Coug,

Obviously we can't make too great of generalizations, but I believe it is the Remington VS SF (Varmint Synthetic Stainless Fluted).  It is essentially a Remington Sendero SF in .308.

With certain factory loads, my gun shoots 1/2" groups (3 shot group).

The problem is that Remington doesn't make this gun anymore.  (I think not even in the black matte version either.)

However, you CAN get this gun (or at least almost identical to it) in the Remington PSS version.  It's the rifle that the police use in their sniper situations and the only difference is the stock design is a little different. (But it is still a black matte bull barreled rifle.)

I just went to Remington's website and found out that they DO make the VS available in .308.

It's model number 9705.
It has a 26" Black Matte bull barrel.
It weighs 9 lbs.
It MSRP is $759. (about $100 less than the PSS version).

A rifle with a better design saftey & more accurate  too than the Remmie is Winchester Mod.70 varmint or target, You can get it with peep sights. 10 rd. group you can cover with a dime at 100 yd. 10 rd. group at 500yd you can cover with a playing card.

You may want to look at the Rem 700 police. Rem says they take the best barrels and use them there. Also a different stock, HS precision if I remember right. KN

The barrels that remington puts on their Police rifles are the same as the VS barrels.  The only difference between the Police and the VS is the stock - which, yes, is made by HS Precision.

Yes its the same barrel, but Remington told me that they hand pick the best ones for the police. How they are determining that I don't know. Thats just what they told me.  KN

KN,

I guess what Remington told you makes sense - put better barrels on rifles that involve humans, rather than rifles that involve hunting animals.  I just wonder what criteria Remington uses to decide which barrels are better.  Did they tell you?

If accuracy is the main criteria the the 40X Remington should qualify.
