Back in Sept. I dropped my Winchester 94 Wrangler I in 32 Winchester Special off at ROBAR
http://www.robarguns.com/ to have it refinished. I opted for the Roguard finish.
The problem with many of the post 64 Winchesters is that in order for Winchester to cut costs they went to a cast receiver instead of a forged receiver. Since the receiver is cast it will not accept conventional bluing. So they flashed a metal that would accept bluing to the receiver. No big deal, right. Wrong. The finish is very delicate especially for some reason on rolled engraved receivers. Many Commemoratives and Wranglers have the problem where the flashing starts to show through. You have to keep an eye out for rust. And Winchester doesn't use this refinishing process anymore. I believe they went back to forged receivers with the angle ejects??
But anyway I searched around and asked a lot of questions. I received a lot of very good information from many shooters. Not one suggestion was bad. So I opted for the Roguard finish. The main reason they are just a few miles away.
I stopped off at ROBAR and showed them what I had. I asked them about the rolled engraving. It was very important to keep the engraving. Because Roguard is sprayed on then baked. I was told only the fine lines would not show. I was still hesitant but decide what the heck. I left it with them.
I picked it up last Monday. I was real nervous. But it came out
BEAUTIFUL. All the rolled engraving is still there. I had the whole carbine refinished except for the silvery parts. I compared it to my Lever Scout. There is no comparison. The Roguard looks better than the bluing. I wish I new how to post pictures.
I will drop off my Lever Scout with them. My Lever Scout is a Winchester 94 Wrangler in 30-30. But I will drop it off when they have specials. I saved 20% because of their Summer Special.
