1st time out with Ultra 243
« on: May 10, 2004, 07:13:22 AM »
I finally managed to get out on the weekend with the new 243.  And for the most part I am happy, lurking in this group for a while had prepared me for some of the most common problems.

I did a cotton swab polish, and out of 30 rounds (there is a reason for just 30 but chalk that up to cheap scope   ) I had 1 stuck case and that was shot #2 so I will redo the chamber polish but I will use the once fired case method.

I did not shoot any groups knowing that it will take some round to break-in all I did was get it on at 25 yards then it took a couple of shots at  rock at 100 ish. then of chasing gophers.

Even with the heavy trigger it was shooting minute of gopher. I figured i could break-in at the range or in the field.

I also did some prep work on the bore with JB we will see if that helped.I made sure the action was clean so I had no auto openings.

The forearm still has a date with some sand paper (the washer did not get me enough clearance). I really should have looked at that before the day I went out shooting but that is my own fault.

One thing surprised me I did not find reloading from the prone position to be that bad.  I had enough clearance on the rest I was using, so that the stock could drop and the ejected case would ping of my shoulder dropping in front of me.

One question, does anyone use a bi-pod hauling around an ammo box and a sand bag got old real fast and shooting sticks don't strike me as being solid enough for PD's.  Am I just stuck with it ?

All told I am very happy with the gun  now if I could just figure out a way I as a Canadian could get it in for the barrel program.

I use a bipod on my Ultra, and its alot better than bags on this particular rifle. I just put enough strips of business cards in front of the lug to float the forearm.  This works for me,and its the only thing that helps. Digger

I have a 223 Ultra and just put a bipod on it and love it.13-23 inches and works great for sitting and some prone(a touch high).I was shooting off of shooting sticks but decided to give the bipod a try.It is nice.

Do you guys mount your bipods on the swivel lug or forward of it?

:D  I use a harris wedge on my Handi to allow the bipod to fit on the forearm better. Prior to purchasing the wedge, the bipod wouldn't sit on the forearm snugly.
Shoot straight , shoot often.
