New bullet for the .45-70...
« on: February 04, 2003, 06:17:22 AM »
You guys who load the .45-70 may be interested in the fairly new Barnes XFN .45-70 bullet. I have just finished testing it using Hodgdon's H4198 powder, and have been absolutely thrilled with it's accuracy and performance. I have written three articles, one for my column in Water and Woods magazine, and two (one each on the powder and the bullet) for my own online magazine... These will be coming out in the March/April editions of each... As some of you know, GB and I have a boar hunt booked for April at Clarkrange Lodge in Tennessee to try out this combination... if you have not already seen the pictures of the recovered bullets, you can click here to see them... http://www.accs.net/users/drquick/barnes458one1.jpg

:) I've not used this bullet, yet. I am a fan of the Barnes Originals for my 45-70 and 45-90 Winchesters. Both rifles are lt. wts. with nickle steel bbls, and are routinely fired using HV loads.I'll give 'em a try.
I get my kicks from an 1886.

These look pretty good. Do you have any idea what the impact velocity was?

Sure do. The muzzle velocity over the chrony was around 1650 fps. BC is 0.204 and at 50 yards that works out to just about 1500 fps... Check my magazine for an article (actually two, one on the bullet and one on the powder) when the March/April edition goes online on March first...

Is that the all copper bullet ?    If it is,,, it has to seated fairly deep.
I've always been fond of 405 rem. But I'm interested in seeing how this bullet performs on boar !    This bullet could be the answer for those who want a lighter bullet but yet longer , so  that will penatrate.

Yes Buckeye, it is all copper. It is an X bullet with a hollow point and as you can see from the pictures posted elswhere, or in my magazine, developes six petals... It comes in 300 and 250 grain weights and has a crimp grove... Yes, it does seat deep, and you ABSOLUTELY MUST use Barnes reloading data with it...

Yes it is... I don't have the OAL right here in front of me, but it is well below 2.550 and funtions flawlessly in my Marlin 1895... When I can, I will look up the OAL in my binder...

Buckeye, log onto my online magazine at: http://www.accs.net/users/drquick/hfhonlinemagazine.html  The product review article I wrote for Barnes is there now along with the pictures... Also, I just dragged my big butt upstairs and checked the OAL for you... I have 2.512 recorded in my records. The bullets are called XFN (X Flat Nose) but they actually have a hollow cavity that goes in aprox. to the crimp grove... Check the article out...
