what we shoot...
« on: January 10, 2003, 06:27:42 PM »
I shoot several different guns during a season.  Last year it was a .35 Rem in a XP100R pistol, and a .250 Sav. AI. in a T/C Encore pistol.  This year I shot a buck with a Browning lever action in .308, 60 yards, a doe with the .35 Rem., 20 yards, another doe with a .260, 100yards and another with a T/C Encore 45/70 pistol, 30 yards.  I also missed a doe with the 45/70 but it was at 200 yards.  My long range rifle is a Rem 700 trued and squared chambered in .260 AI.

I use either a 338winmag remington 700 open land or a 444s marlin tight wooded areas(bears) I also carry a ruger redhawk 44mag handgun for smaller critters that may comeby the 338 bullets cost too much. My son uses my mossberg '06. Sometimes I may take a military surplus gun for a walk and some fresh air for deer.  Its good to dust them off once in a while.                                                      BigBill

I live 120 miles North of Green Bay Wisc and the country is thick mixed hardwoods and conifers with lots of water and dense cedar and tamarack swamps.

When I was a teen(35-40 yrs ago) everyone carried lever and pump guns in 30-30,.35, or .300 Savage. The past 20 yrs the rifles are generally bolt actions in 30.06,.308,.270 or .243

The 7mm/08 in compact rifles is coming on strong the last couple of years

Most hunters hunt from permanent blinds on private property and temporary natural brush blinds( by law) on public land. I have shot dozens of deer with 30.06 and lately love to carry a classic Sako light weight bolt in .308. My back up is a Tikka SS/Syn in .243
