Cabela's and the 10-MLII
« on: May 17, 2004, 03:56:24 AM »
Just wondered if anyone else had heard this.  I was in the Cabela's in Dundee Michigan last Friday browsing their gun selection.  After looking at one of their thumbhole omega's, I realized that I'd never seen a Savage in their shop.  I asked the clerk if they had any in the back that I could take a look at.  He told me that Cabela's corporate had made the decision that they, "Didn't want to go down that road due to safety concerns."
Now since I can't hunt with smokeless powder in southern Michigan anyway I didn't make a huge stink about it, but it seemed rather strange.  Of course they can sell or not sell whatever they like, but the decision to not sell the Savage over "safety concerns" seems a bit silly.  Has anyone else heard about this policy or was the clerk simply making it up?

For some reason, neither Cabelas or Bass Pro Shops(at least on-line) carry the Savage ML.  I'm sure it has NOTHING to do with safety, but everything to do with politics.  Both retailers like to be catered to by the product manufacturers.  Both demand the lowest purchasing price in the country.  Savage probably didn't pucker up...

bass pro in maryland will not sell ml-10's either. if you ask why, they start looking for the store cop. had one guy there tell me in a low voice, " wish they did. i could sell a bunch of them ". i guess if they did, no one would want a 900 dollar kight. :-D randy can point you to a nice one for a good price.

Vapour,

It's probably more like Cabelas and Savage have not come to an agreement. It is Cabelas' way or the highway with some items that they sell, ie; Leupold Scopes and others. I'll bet the clerk don't even know the reason. When you are a supplier to a company the size of Cabelas, like it or not, they pretty much dictate the prices.

Oh, by the way, you can hunt with the Savage in Southern Michigan (Zone-3), you just can't use smokeless for deer, but you can use smokeless to hunt predators and varmints and other game you can use a rifle on. Also, you can use smokeless to hunt deer in (Zones 1 & 2) during the "All Firearms Deer Seasons", you cannot use smokeless period during any "Muzzleloader Deer Season" Statewide.

Thanks Busta, I didn't know that you could use smokeless on predators.  If I were going hunting up in Zone's 1 or 2 I'd just take my .308 anyway--or get another barrel for my Encore.

Beside's I'd never really buy a gun from Cabela's anyway--better to go elsewhere and pay 10-15% less (at least in southern MI).  Fun to browse though.

Vapour, yep I was told the same thing this past weekend.  I went to Cabela's to buy some powder and got the same response when I asked if I could see one.

It sure is a poor excuse if I ever heard one.  Gee I wonder what would happen if a guy reloaded and put a double charge in his rifle, shotgun or whatever,  would Cabela's be responsible for that as well????

It is a pity that some shops don't know the basics-- after all, they did sell you powder didn't they?
