Tumbling loaded rounds

A fellow at the local gun shop told me that he tumbles live rounds to shine up the cartridges and to remove finger prints and wax that sometimes gets on the cases after loading cast bullets.  Is this a proper proceedure ? If so is there any time limit on how long you should do this.

I have heard of people doing it, but in my opinion its a bad Idea. I see a lot of static build up in tumblers if the humidity and such is just right. Just doesn't seem like a good idea to me. Just my $.02   KN

I believe 10 mins. is the majic number. If this applies to all types of powder I'm not sure. Check out this document written a few years ago about an accident that occured due to tumbled live ammo.http://yarchive.net/gun/ammo/tumble.html

Nimrod,
That was a good article you turned me onto.  Ten minutes and no more for me.  I tried the ten minutes and the cases looked great.  But the bullets were cast and the lead picked up some kind of dull gray coating, case polish I guess and I had to use a terry cloth rag and clean every one of them.  I will use the tumbler again for ten minutes but only for jacketed bullets.  Thanks for the reply
