35 WHELEN
« on: May 16, 2004, 04:30:28 AM »
From what I have been able to read, the .35 whelen seems to be a pretty good cartridge for large annimals[ moose, bear] at short to  moderate ranges[ where most animals are taken anyway]
I see remington is making a limted run of their pump in 35whelen this year, I wonder if H&Ris going to do the same? It seems to me that a good utility gun would be stainless with a composite stock. Not pretty but functional

The .35 Whelen is an excellent cartridge for Moose and bears, even grizzly.  Glad to hear that about Remington making a run on .35s in their pump guns that is my favorite gun.  As for NEF making one, I've talked to NEF recently about that and was told not planned for the future.  Also when I sent my .35 Whelen Handi back recently for warrenty work I was told if the barrel needed replacing I would be out of luck since they no longer had .35 Whelen barrels.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

My Whelen is a sportized '03 Springfield and I love it.  When you get into the heavy bullet weights there really isn't that much of a velocity difference between cast and jacketed.   It's easy to make cases and load down using pistol bullets.

I have some custom Lee moulds that throw 200 and 250 grain weights.   Don't use it too much as most of what we have here (elk) that is suitable for it involves a drawing and there is competition from archery and muzzleloader when choosing what to apply for.

I am waiting around for an Encore pistol barrel in the Whelen to show up in the classifieds.
