New Barrel
« on: May 19, 2004, 01:51:24 PM »
Well today I made a decesion to do something to make my shooting easier to handle. I traded my 45/70 16" barrel with the T/C Muzzlebreak off today to Ed at Eds Conenders. I am getting another barrel in a caliber easier to handle with the carpel tunnel in both of my hands. My next move (if the conversionto 762x25 does'nt pan out) is to get a 22 LR & 357  Octogon barrels since I can get them relatively inexpensively. I know the octogan barrels are somewhat light but in 22 and 38 special(which is all I plan to fire in the 357 barrel) they should be easy to handle especually with pachmayr forends? on both barrels(perhaps just on the 357 barrel).
This will more than likely take some time as now I am on a fixed income and I only have a small allance weekly to save my pennies from. I think I will get the 357 barrel first I think as I already have 3 22 caliber barrels and the 4th is just a completion of a "set"( a 16" carbine,10" bull with red dot, 6.5" shorty, and the new one will be the 10" octogon with iron sights will complete the set)
The one think I will need is a caliber powerful enough for elk or moose that has recoil I can handle even is that round is only a 44 or 41 magnum. This barrel will be either in 14" or a 16+ so I can use it as a carbine as well.
I am also considering in the duture a 30-30 & 223 barrels in 16+ for a couple more carbine barrels. but these will of course be a ways down the road and will give me something to look forward to.

I am curious where you will find a Pachmayr foreend for an octagon TC barrel. I am not suggesting you can't find one but I would be surprised.

I simply use a regular one it may not be a perfect fit and leave a small gap but for plinking who cares I just want the weight up front.

Jim,
Before you buy a .41 or 30-30 give me a yell. I have a BullBerry heavy contour 14 inch .41RemMag and a T/C 20 inch 30-30 that I'll make a deal on that you can't refuse.
Love those .41s'

sorry to tell you that the screw spacing is not the same between the 10 inch bull and the octagon barrels.

If you just want to shoot 38 special rounds out of the 357 mag barrel then why not just get a 38 special barrel?

If i was only able to shoot low recoiling rounds and want a round that is good enough for big game hunting I would look into a 300 whisper while it is a little light for elk but so is all the other rounds that are light in the recoil department or you could move up a little to the 30 or 357 herrett

Would'nt the space bar that comes with the pachmayr forend allow for that? I would think it would at least I hope so. As for buying  357 BARREL instead of a 38 special well its finances I can get an octogon 357 for about $100 (or even less) I can't get a 38 special barrel for the same money(at least no where I have looked as yet) So basicly its a matter of ecomnics. Same reason for the octogon 22lr instead of another bull barrel they run 175 or so octogon non collectable run $100 or less good shooting for less money. both are no recoil rounds so the octogon makes little to no difference except in forends and apprently screw spacing.

you may have to do some drilling for the hanger bar to fit they are spaced for the 10 inch and 14 inch barrels (the first screw stud is in the same place for the 10 and 14 bull barrels.)
I have a good shape 10 inch bull barrel that I will be willing to trade. and If you want I have a octagon forend that I had to make a screw hole for that you can have shoot me an email and I will take a picture of it  for you. it works OK but doesn't look good. it is yours if you want it.
