44 wal-mart special
« on: May 25, 2004, 12:18:32 PM »
I ordered a 44 handi rifle from wal-mart on the 21st and got it on the 25th. (199.44 total)  The catalog was a 2003 edition that we picked the weapon from and there were only two listings there.  One for the synthetic and one for the wood.  I already had heard that the synthetic 44 was no longer offered so the only other listed option was wood.  There was no mention if it was the with or without sights model.  Anyway I wanted the slick barrel and when it came it had sights.  I chose to live with it as the exchange would be more hastel than my time is worth. Anyway once you look at that big honkin hole in the end of the barrel it is hard to give back!  Of course the wood is mismatched but I can stain it later.

I am requesting input about some upgrade in iron sights.  I had originally planned to use a scope for my old eyes but it sure feels good to wrap your hand around the action at the balance point.  My options are open.  Thanks guys,  Gary

Congrats on the new Handi.  Look at the NEF site www.hr1871.com and click on the red "Store Specials" link.  Check out the Williams FP rear sight.  Not sure if you wanted a peep or not.

If I get another big bore it will have a Bushnell red dot on it.  Don't figure it will be used for long shots anyway.

Hey handirifle,

The Store Specials said that the Williams fp sight was for the Target and Buffalo Classic.  Will it work in a regular Handi?  Is there a need to change out the front sight to go with the FP? Thanks, Gary

Ok, I am going to order the FP sights.  Do I have to have the barrel tapped to accept them or do they fit to the holes provided?

the peep sight fits in the two back holes for the scope base, No drill and tapping, very easy to do to mount the FP sight Marv.

Yea the peep mounts on the scope rail holes so it should fit ANY drilled and tapped Handi.  They say that cause the one on the BC is more limiting and lots of people were asking for more.

I put the Williams peep on my 45-70 Handi.  Only shot it once, but more is planned.  You may need a higher front sight (available from NEF) to zero it (about $7.00 -needs bluing too).  I initially set the peep by sighting through the peep and on through the original sights.  The rear open sight  will have to be removed after this.  Using a fine punch (or a piece of thin music wire) take out the cross pin and catch the elevation spring.  The mounting screw is now easy to remove.  Save the parts for later.

By the way, the FP will be great for hunting, but the aperature is large for accurate paper punching.
