Wal Pards it's coming together
« on: January 16, 2003, 12:00:54 PM »
After Big Ed's generous offer to outfit me with leather I figured I needed some guns to go in that leather. Since I have had an EMF Dakota and really did like it and since 2-3 of you have assured me they are good guns to work with I made a phone call.

Called up Gary at EMF and twisted his arm to send me a pair on loan for Product Testing. He allowed as how he reckoned he could do that. If I decide they are what I want to stay with I can buy them for an excellent price and if not can pack them up and ship them back and owe nothing. Gets me some guns to work with while deciding what I want. I'm pretty shore I really do want Colt Clones and that I want those 4-3/4" barrels.

Getting closer ta being ready to go see what it's lak shooting wid da pards. Had a long talk with Big Ed and got the leather headed my way. We swapped some stories and he gave me more insight on the kinda fun I have to look forward to.

Do I need to have joined SASS PRIOR to the first match? Rat now I have no clue what kinda name I'd be a looking fer since I'm reasonably shore all uv my usually aliases have been spoken fer. Been called Billy the Kid in my younger days but shore ain't been a kid in awhile and I'm shore that got taken real early on. Been going by Graybeard fer awhile but can't believe that would be still open in SASS either. So reckon I need sumpin else. Don't think the old Willy de wace car driver would work either.  :)  Gonna take a bit uv pondering I reckon.

A great big THANKS to both Big Ed and EMF for helping me get out to a good start in CAS.

You don't need to be a member to shoot in anything except SASS events like state, regionals and bigger....unless the club you go to requires it for some reason. Lots of clubs aren't even SASS clubs. But most go by close to SASS rules. If there's not another Graybeard where you shoot, go for it. Take your time with the name if you want to change it. CAS isn't SASS. They are just the biggest CAS org.

Congrats on the guns. Do they need any more field testers?

Well that sounds good. I'd shore like to stick to Graybeard if I can. Can't say I won't ever go to any of the larger state or national matches but it is a bit doubtful. If local club will accept me without membership and as Graybeard that'll suit me for now. Then if needed later I can do something different.

Dunno if they need any more product testers or not.    Took me a good bit of effort to become accepted as one like the magazine writers. Back when I got started at it the only one I know who was doing it on a website before me was Jesse. He gave me some tips and I had Dan Johnson a magazine writer put in a good word for me with a couple of manufacturers and I got started. Now most of the bigger name manufacturers will ship me stuff to test when I ask. Got some guns from Bob Baker at Freedom Arms and Taurus rat now and these from EMF on the way.

With the size of my site it carries a fair amount of clout with manufacturers but a big responsiblibity as well. We reach about 18,000 folks per week on this site.

GB,
Great news.  Think you are really going to find this is an enjoyable activity.  Might want to peruse the SASS Handbook http://www.sassnet.com/pages/shootershandbook.html before your first match just so you have a handle on what's allowed and what isn't.  Regarding an alias, I think "Grandpa Graybeard" has a nice ring to it.
