Generally yes.  You will find that you'll have some cleaning issues.  In some cases (as with the Cutts compensator on Thompson SMG's) the baffles are thin and occasionally one will get broken.  Shouldn't have any problem with the types that have holes bored into them (vs. the slots).

Dont know ifin this will help but when my gunsmith ported my 1895ss he cut 3 horz. slots on each side, then backed bored the bbl one or two thousants to just behind the ports to prevent shaving lead. My 45/70 dosent know what a jacketed bullet is, and havant had any probs. with lead shavings.

ABSOLUTELY.
I had a purpose built .32-20 made around a martini .22cal action.
I fitted a .303 British barrel and shoot subsonic cast bullets in wheel weight from 115-175gr through a silencer.
I works a treat, is dead quiet and there is no problem with the suppressor.
Cheers

TCBK-what kind of twist do you have?

I have a little 9" stainless 300 Whisper T/C, that has shot more 1/4MOA groups than any other firearm I've ever owned. But all the bullets were the 240 Sierra MK. I considered getting a heavy mold made, but was concerned that the 1:8 twist would strip the bullet? Also heard that a tear drop bullet design works better at the subsonic velocities? Also considered making a .17 Whisper, shooting the 37 grain bullet, but wasn't sure what kind of twist I needed? No practical use I know, but would be a neat little Whisper.  :D
