Farquharson Kit
« on: May 26, 2004, 02:17:52 AM »
An action kit is being made in a limited number.  If anyone would like to learn more about the kit, address the email to:  ndume@activematrix.net,  subject line:  Farquharson Action Kit

This is a copy of a rifle made years ago.  This is not a project for a beginner to try.  A post on the Single Shot Rifles post has more details.  The exact model of this action kit is in question by a couple of people.  I don't keep up with the little things, only the working parts of guns.

There a gentleman who has a list of old single shot actions he is producing.  I don't remember the name right now but will look for the brochure he sent.  These are as cast parts and there are many different actions.  These included the wincheser 1885(high wall and low wall) Sharps, Stevens, and several others..  If there is interest I'll dig up the papers and add them here.  It looked like a wonderful project at the time, but I have no time...

Les and GunNut69,

I'd love to have more information on these action kits.

If the parts are "as-cast" and suitable for engraving and final fitting, that would mean they also need heat treating, correct?

John and Gunnut69'

There might be some interest in other castings of actions.  John the reason that I say these projects are not for a beginner is because of the fitting required and the heattreatment of parts.  Anyone working with guns needs to understand basic metallurgy.  In the old days, Industrial Math, Drawing and Blue print reading, and metallurgy were required courses.  In my early years I worked for the company that made the Ranger action and the Omega actions.  We made one action by machining the parts and the other was made mostly by castings.  The Omega was 4340 steel cast and heat treated.  I understand that these Farquharsons are made of 8260.  I would like to see the instructions for fitting and heat treatment of this action.

My understanding was they were as cast and were cast using the lost wax process.  They would need to be fitted and properly heat treated.  There are outfits that will take care of the heat treat since you know the material, it shouldn't be a problem..  Engraving is done after the heat treat process.  Otherwise there would be problems with melting the inlays!
