I am a "New" shooter but silhouette is primararly suited for a shooter that is looking for a challange and one that loves reactive targets. Silhouette is a game that with $300 in hand you go go buy equipment ($200 cz and a repeatable scope)that the best in the world could shoot close to their high score with. (If they woud want to is another story, let's not get boged down for now). What I am saying is this, at the heart of the game it is 90% shooter and 10% equipment. IMHO if you have a rimfire rifle that will shoot ~1.5" CTC group at 100 meters off the bench you are ready for silhouette.

Most of the time we shoot at (4) banks of 10 "animals" each for a 40 round match. Small Bore silhouette is shot with a .22lr and the distances are 40M, 60M, 77M, and 100M. You shoot the animals in order, under a time limitation of ~30 sec per animal. For a bank of 5 pigs you get 2mins, 45 secs with 15 secs of that being a "ready" peroid.

If the animal you are shooting at (assuming you are shooting at the right # animal, they have to be shot in order) falls off the rail as a result of your shot it is a hit, if not it is a miss. The game is that simple, hit or miss. You don't have to wait to look at paper, you can see and hear your results as well as those shooting around you.

Someone will come along with a website that will explain more, but I encourage you to find a local range and call the match Director for some information. If he is worth his salt he will offer to "Sponsor" your first match and the whole thing should be free. If not give me his name and phone # and I will call and make the arrangements and pay for your first match and line up someone to shoot with etc. if at all possible.

Hope this helps,

George

glorified tin can shooting.

much more fun than poking holes in paper.

I didn't know if "Tin Can" was a PC phrase with all of you serious shooters here... That gin-phodo "Dawg" guy is mean from what I have heard... :P

If we must be called Tin Can shooters, we are VERY serious tin can shooters...

And now -- assuming that you're not just trolling for silly responses -- after you've read all the BS (none of us would ever be snipers, we're all scared to be out in the woods alone)  :-D  go here and see what it's really all about:

PS: Let us know where you're located and maybe we can get you invited to a match.

Look at this web site.

www.sunnyvalegunclub.com

Click on Sporting Events on the letft of the page.

Silhouettes is a tough shooting event.  But don't let that discourage you.  I shoot with a lot of kids your age.  It is a fun event and the other shooter are more than willing to help new shooters.

I'm sure if you find a match near where you live someone will give yuo all the information you need to get started.

I have a website more specifically oriented toward smallbore rifle silhouette.  It has pictures of targets, rules and regulations etc.  That is typically shot with 22 Long Rifle ammo.  Most ranges do not allow the hyper-velocity ammunition because it dammages the targets too easily.

I live in New Richmond Wisconsin.

Also would a 30-06 be suitable.

.30-06 has too much powder capacity to be ideal for the sport but lots of people use it including one of my shooting friends in Australia. It's just fine for getting started, especially if you handload.

I can attest to the 30.06 being a bit too heavy.  I used one with honady 150gr  "light magnums" (3100fps) for my first silhouette match.  Shot 35 from the bench getting sighted in at the 4 distances and a few for practice, then 40 in the match for 75 total for the day.  I have some  amusing photos of a "colorful" upper arm and shoulder.

One popular round that has good power and less brutality is the 7mm08.

As near as I can tell by checking my list against Mapquest, there are no NRA matches held near to you. (I may have missed one.)

Go here and see if there are any locations that may be within reasonable distance:

http://www.tsra.com/NRASlet06.htm

We always try to help newcomers get a start -- and youngsters are especially welcome -- but unless you can convince your family that a couple hundred mile trip to 'try' a match is reasonable, I think you'll have to wait a bit...

(You may want to call one of the match directors on the list who's nearest you -- there are matches in the southern part of your state and in MN -- and ask if he knows of any other matches. There might be clubs holding informal competitions that you could attend.)

Yeah i thought my 06 would be a little big.  I reacently started reloading, so that would help.  This is another time when I dislike living where I do.  I know my parents won't take me to any of these matches, so i guess I will have to wait till next summer when i can drive.  This really sucks because silhouette is much more interesting to me than other types of shooting competitions.

Do you have a local range close to you?

No reason not to still have fun shooting silhouette.  You can buy a set of animals or even swingers that can be set at the different distances.  This will allow you to practice this sport, it also gets a lot of interest from others at the range.  This interest could possibly cause a Silhouette league to be set up at your local range.

If you need help or info on this, let us know.  There are  a lot of people here that are very knowledgeable about getting these started.

Good luck..
