.22 Short ..... .17 M2
« on: May 17, 2004, 05:31:54 PM »
I'm in the market for a little rimfire, and I'm thinking of either a .22 short, or the new .17 M2.  I know that most .22s also shoot the .22 short, but is there any gun maker out there that specifically makes a gun just in .22 short?

Also, what guns do you guys recommend for the .17 M2?

Finally, which do you think will be quieter?  The .22 short or the .17 M2?

I would think the 22 short would be much quieter. It will also be much less powerful.   KN

Many .22's will fire long rifle, long and shorts.  Why not get one that will handle the long rifles as well?  You may want that for the future.  the .17's aren't available yet.  It will probably be a couple more months.

Also for quiet rounds, try the Super Colibri by Aguilla.  These have no powder, only primer.  They sound like a pellet gun in my rifle and still have enough punch to dispatch small pests like pigeons and rats.  In my semi-auto, they don't have enough "oomph" to cycle the action though.

I had a .22 short made for my Contender with a match chamber (bullet is engraved by rifling upon closing the action) from a leftover stub at a custom barrel maker.  This way I was able to make this little experiment fairly cheap and get a neat little plinker.  Is it practical, probably no more than using a regular .22 barrel but it has the benefit of being unique.

I know that the .22short will have much less "ooomph" on game, and thus also on the action so as to not cycle it.  For this reason, I may need to get a bolt-action rifle, or a single shot.  I wonder though if a bolt-action rifle can shoot shorts like a semi-auto can.

My Marlin bolt actions will fire shorts with no problems.
I "assume" that most decent bolt actions will.
If you want a QUIET round, get you some CCI - CB CAPS.
The work quite well on most "Vermin" within about 50 yards.
I have an old Marlin-Glenfield model 20 that is sighted in
specifically for them. At 40 yards they make one ragged
hole on paper!  They are deadly on rats, starlings Squab and
things about that size within that range. Head shot Squirrels
do not know the difference between them
and a Long Rifle Bullet either. (Wish I liked Squirrel)

I don’t know of any clip fed rimfires that shoot the short. Either a single shot or tube fed gun will be your choices. Not all tube fed guns shoot shorts either. The only repeaters that I’m aware of that are advertised to shoot shorts are the Remington speedmaster( the older ones do) and the browning 22 lever action. You might have to hit the pawn shops.

Shorts are almost a thing of the past. I do believe that some of the low velocity LR ammo is loaded down to 22 short level. Maybe.

Be Safe,
Scott

I shoot shorts out of my single shot Stevens Favorite.  Somehow seems right...

All of my clip fed rifles will shoot shorts.
Several of my semi-autos will too. I have a Browning
Buck-mark pistol that very rarely jams on a short.
Most modern guns are not designed for them, but
I have found that they will still shoot them. I think
that the short may not be around too much longer,
and that will be a shame. In my opinion, the short
is, was and always will be the best small came cartridge
ever devised by the minds of men! Anyone who would
argue that fact simply hasn't hunted with them enough.
The .22 short hollowpoint to me has the perfect power to game
ratio on anything rabbit sized & below within reasonable range.
Now that I have said all that, I think I am going to buy a few
thousand rounds of the good ol' short hollowpoints
just in case I am right and they do disappear from store shelves.
