Hare and rabbits without dogs in the East?
« on: December 02, 2003, 12:36:52 PM »
I have read a number of articles written by some western writers on hunting jackrabbits, cottontails and hare without dogs. I would also refer to the late Mr. Bob Milek of Thermopolis , Wyoming who was an avid handgun hunter. I read some old articles he penned concerning the hunting of tehse creatures with various handguns. It seems that he was quite good at it.

It seems that in the East it is just too brushy to spot and stalk the members of the lepus family. Unless there is some sort of trick that I am unaware of.

Any one care to offer advice on this matter concerning the pursuit of rabbits/hare with handguns in New England?

I have done plenty of rabbit hunting without dogs.  It takes at least three people to do it but it can turn out some rabbits.  I mean we more then likely missed alot in the tick cover but if one person walks through the tickets and one walks the edge one either side you can get your share of rabbits coming out.

I live in Ky/Tn and I hunt Rabbit sometimes with my Ruger MK II It takes a lot of practice. What I recommend is to throw a walnut as hard as you can and try to shoot it. I recommend shooting natural/instintive(without using sights) if you can not do this I recommend learning to shoot cans without sights at around 5-50yrds&everything in between. when you can shoot a rolling walnut with your off hand I say you can try to get you a cottentail with your primary hand...also try to shooting thrown marbles in mid-air(the large marbles) just be sure you have a good backstop. I like the remington target loads and cci stingers. Most people say that stingers spread out too much but my MK II shoots them great. Hope this helps. Happy Hunting!  Also when the rabbit jumps up you gotta be ready...
