Does a 300WBY need a brake ???
« Reply #30 on: March 23, 2005, 06:24:01 AM »
I have an old M70 originally chambered for .300 H&H and subsequently rechambered to .300 Weatherby. I absolutely LOVE it! It is my favorite rifle.. the only other one that comes close is my .375 H&H. Anyway, I am a solid proponent of muzzle brakes. From an effectiveness standpoint the best form of muzzle brake is where you actually port the barrel, but I might suggest a removeable brake.. which I think the Accu-brake is... It allows you to shoot to your heart's content at the range... and if you hear any whining about it being too loud... IT'S A RIFLE RANGE! IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE LOUD AND PEOPLE HAD BETTER BE WEARING HEARING PROTECTION. Shame on them if they aren't. The key to a successful hunt is preparation, and there is no better preparation than practice, practice, practice... a muzzle brake takes away the issue of fatigue flinching. And I don't care what people say, everyone suffers from this after a while of shooting a .300 Wby Magnum. 20 rounds, sure... but after 40 or 60 rounds you're going to be flinching. If a brake helps you practice without a flinch you are going to be much more effective in the field.

Then, as some have suggested, if you are hunting in a situation where you may be partnered up with someone, take the brake off. Recoil is not really the issue in the field so it is no loss. In Africa, many PH's will make you take it off, or wrap it in aluminum foil to render it ineffective... and that's legit... but in general, whatever allows you to further enjoy your shooting and hunting is a good thing.

I would never put a brake on a gun. NEVER!

I say for a 300 you should not need a brake BUT you do need to make some sand bags that you can throw over your shoulder and be balanced
and not weight more then 2,3 lbs to soke up the recoil when shooting at the bench. :D
