After three years of working on him, my friend finally sold me his Mowrey Tree Rifle. It is a 22 inch barrel 58 caliber rifle with an extreme drop to the but plate (is "but" one or two t's when it goes with plate?).

Anyhow, I understand that this rifle goes back to the 60's. There is not much on the net about Mowrey rifles, anybody have any info?

Two t's. Mowrys are pretty nice rifles in my estimation. They used to be made in Texas, I think. Actually, they used to make a 12 bore shotgun, too. I keep my eyes open for them. They made a version with Hawken style butt plate and hardware that is very handsome. Your carbine version is fairly rare. It makes a nice deer gun especially in wooded areas. The guns are quite stoutly built and give good service. Folks that I've known that have them wouldn't let them go for love nor money.

Deer Creek Products, P.O. Box 246, Waldron, IN 46182 (765-525-6181)makes Mowrey Rifle kits "completely assembled, ready to fire." I've had good service from these folks, but I heard from someone else that they were less than impressed with their products. Give them a call, anyway.

I owned a 45 Mowrey and a buddy talked me out of it - I am still kicking myself. They are very comfortable off hand rifles and great to hunt with. Mine had a very fast twist (1-28") and would only shoot bullets but it shot them quite well. The actions are very simple and rugged. I still see these rifles occasionally and would buy one again if I can find a ball-shooter.

Thanks for your interest. I have taken this rifle to the range and found that three balls will touch at 50 yds with 120 grains of 2f. (Yes, I do use padding and a rest)

I do not know the twist but have discovered that I do need to put an over powder patch down the bore, before the patched round ball.

I own 2 Mowreys.A54 and a 32.Seems like some of them were made with a gain twist.Neither of mine have the gain but I sure wouldn't part with either one.

I believe that this rifle was partially hand made as the front and rear sight slots were hand cut. The 58 caliber barrel was cut down but was stamped and had a serial number hand stamped into it. The tumbler was the old style but the cover plate was the new style with the hole drilled in it. The ram rod is made of solid brass adding a lot of weight to the front of the rifle.

The Texas built guns had a lot of hand work in them. In their day they were a premium priced gun and worth it, too.
